1989 Honda Accord 2.0L 2BL SOHC 4cyl water pump replacement?
The water pump is driven by the alternator belt so timing isn't an issue. I searched extensively online and every source that is specific to this model doesn't require the timing belt cover to be removed. However, there's a small lip from the timing belt cover that goes over the water pump. Here is a pretty accurate diagram of my engine:
The diagram doesn't show the lip I was talking about. The only way I can think to take it off is to slide it right towards the alternator but the problem is that one of the mounting holes (the right most hole) is part of the alternator belt tensioner system. The belt is tightened by loosening a pivot point bolt on the bottom of the alternator and tightening or loosening a bolt on the top controls the tension.
here is a diagram to better frame my problem:
If you look at the diagram the bolt labeled the alternator bolt (This tightens onto one of the waterpump holes) , on my vehicle this bolt is exciting from the water pump and a nut tightens the mount here. I know that may sound confusing but instead of having an alternator bolt, as shown in diagram 2, I have a nut that attaches to a bolt. The bolt can't be removed from the back side.
I can't slide the pump right with this bolt. Any ideas?
I ran out of room for the question but I'm reluctant to remove the cover because it would require removing the drivers side motor mount. I've never done this. Also I have just replaced my valve cover gasket and would like to avoid redoing that.
You'll have to remove the cover and the alternator bolts to replace the water pump. The bolt can be removed as I have done it before. What are you going to do when the alternator quit?
Edit: I have the Factory Service Manuals (including the Supplement Manuals) for the car. If you want the manuals give me your E mail address so I can send it to you.
In order to get to your water pump you will have remove a lot of stuff i.e. Plastic cover, valve cover, and so on. You will have to loosing up the motor mount bolt check out youtube they some some good how to do videos there and will explain what you need to do. Hell if your car needs is replace your timing belt. I have a 95 accord 2.2l vetch and within the next coming weeks I will try this myself heres a link to a helpful one not you generation but still an idea
- How can I stop water from flowing back into my Honda WB30 Water Pump 1100 LPM 80mm Outlet when the heavy duty hose attached gets blocked? I have a 1000l take of water attached to a Honda WB30 Water Pump 1100 LPM 80mm Outlet, alongside a heavy duty hose I use to water window boxes around London. When I park up the van and have to cross the road to water certain jobs, the pipe is occasionally temporarily blocked when a car runs over the hose pipe. This sends water back to the pump, and eventually breaks it. What can I do to stop the water/ pressure breaking the pump?
- Is the 1985 Honda CR 500 water pump gear shaft compatible with the 86-2001 Honda CR 500 water pump gear shaft? I have a 1985 CR 500 and the water pump gear shaft broke. It has been discontinued from Honda, and no one else has it. It is a metal gear. The one's for the 1986-2001 CR 500 are plastic. If I have to use plastic, I will. However, I prefer not to. If anyone knows where I can get the OEM 1985 Honda CR 500 gear shaft, I would forever be grateful.
- How do I change a water pump on a 2000 Honda Passport 3.2L V6 and what tools are required? I could really use some detailed instructions as well as some diagrams if possible. If I need to change the timing belt I will need instructions on how to do that exactly with a diagram so I don't trash my engine.
- Honda Jazz won't take water in the water fill cap? I recently purchased a Honda jazz 2005 mode from a garage, top condition. I'm going on a long journey tomorrow and routinely like I would with any car I checked the water and oil levels. (cold engine). Water level was halfway between min and max so I attempted to top it up with coolant mix, however, as in poured the h20/coolant mixture into the water tank it just came straight back up as though the tank was full, although I can see it's only half full. Any ideas?
