2005 Honda Accord Manual transmission problem?
Hi, I have a 2005 Honda Accord 5-speed manual coupe. The car has about 157,000 miles. The car drives fine except sometimes the gears grind. This only happens in two instances. One instance is when the car is rolling very slowly (about 5 mph) and if I try to shift into first, the gears will grind. The only way for me to get into first without grinding in this situation is by pushing it into first quickly and with a slight amount of force or just waiting for the car to come to a complete stop, which isn't always possible. The second instance of the gears grinding is if I'm in high rpms for 2nd gear and I shift into third or if I shift into third too quickly regardless of rpms. The gears will grind unless I wait a second or two between the shift. This only happens going into third gear. My friend who is a mechanic suggested that my synchros were going out and that I might as well buy an entire new transmission. Two other friends of mine who aren't official mechanics said that my car needs a new clutch. I personally agree more with the synchros going out. So:
What do you think the problem is?
What is my best course of action?
Approximately how much will it cost?
Added (1). I forgot to mention this but I always make sure that I push the clutch all the way to the floor.
Gears will grind if clutch not depressed all the way and car still moving. Same goes for shifting through the gears. Synchros are probably worn. As far as "new" transmission they don't have new anymore your options are rebuilt from transmission shop, remanufactured from dealer or used from junkyard. If the shop determines it needs to be rebuilt due to worn synchros then the clutch will also be replaced why keep it in there if it might need to be replaced in the future. Saving you labor to pull transmission again. If clutch bad will grind in all gears including reverse. Find local shop at ATRA.COM for road test and estimate to repair
It does sound worn synchronisers. Surprising on a relatively new car. I would just adapt to the necessary driving style, but a new transmission might be your best bet
- Transmission going out on friend's 2004 Impala. Is it possible to install a manual transmission taken from a 1992 Honda Civic in this car? Not worth replacing trans on a car this old, but the engine and everything else are still perfect. My friend was able to get a free manual trans from a 1992 Honda Civic. But i'm not sure whether or not you can use a trans from a different vehicle
- HONDA 2007 ACCORD MANUAL TRANSMISSION PROBLEM? Clutch fluid is full everything is checked besides transmission. When I start the car it won't go into first gear from neutral but if I start it in first it goes smooth and easy up to third gear but fourth and fifth kinda hard. Reverse is an issue too… Any ideas?
- Can you put a 7 speed manual transmission in a car that comes stock with a 4 or 5 speed manual transmission? I'm just curious to know if this is possible or if anyone has tried it. I wany to know what is possible to get the most out of a car. I'm probably going to be getting an acura(no hondas) and doing the necessary upgrades, turbo and all that. If anyone has any experience let me know
- Honda Accord (2003-2005) or honda civic?(2003-2005)? I'm debating a honda civic or accord for my 16 year old son and was wondering which one is better for a first timer. Please list the good things about both the cars I wanna make sure my son is with a reliable good first time car. Thank you. the good and bad about the cars*
