Could be any number of issues involving your torque converter, all of them involving a lot of mechanical work in order to get to the torque converter itself.

1 possible answer is the solenoid valves may have malfunctioned. Take it to a garage that specialises with auto transmission. Then get ready and make sure you are sat down when they tell you the price. Check the transmission fluid level and color. If the fluid has gone a much darker color than new fluid, then the fluid is burnt and needs changing, make sure the car is on level ground when checking fluid level. Do not attempt to do any other check unless you have data and tools, and plenty of time
