Does my car need a new battery, or What's wrong with it?
I drive a 2007 Honda Accord EX 2.4L (4 cylinder) I got it back in august 2014 (4.5 Months) Just earlier this week I've noticed like if I have my car off all night and its very cold the following morning my car kind of hesitates to crank like it has a small delay when I turn the key to start it. But it only seems to be that first crank of the day and when it is very cold. I told my dad and he immediatley said its the battery. But he isn't a mechanic and has never worked on a car. Do cars always do this when it's cold, should I be worried, Should I go ahead and a new battery, Do I NEED a new battery? Someone please help. Depth details please!
How old is the battery? Since the advent of calcium maintenance free batteries without cell service caps, the average car battery only lasts about 4 years in a cold winter climate. As a teen, I remember getting a Die-Hard Max back in '82 that literally lasted 8 years through two separate Chev V8 trucks and many sub-zero winters, maybe 240K miles in that 8 years and the battery would still hold a charge for a week. Car batteries have gone the way of planned obsolescence now that you can't pull the cell caps off and service them regularly. Everyone wants the maintenance free battery that dies 6 months after the prorated replacement warranty ends.
Certainly sounds like the battery is "weak", meaning at the end of its life span. You can see if you have a local auto parts store which might "test" your battery but it is most likely that your battery indeed needs to be replaced.
Yes, batteries have less power when they get colder, so it makes perfect sense which is why your dad believes this to be true. Most batteries only last 4 - 5 years.
In the case the old man is right. Well, kind of. It most likely is the battery. Search cold cranking amps.
The colder it is the lower the battery amps. You can get a free test at autozone, advance auto parts, etc.
Also if the previous owner replaced the battery maybe they got cheapest one.
Also if you take only short drives, let the car warm up in the driveway for 10 minutes, might put little extra charge on the battery.
If it's sti starting leave it alone or get a battery test done by your garage. (Takes about 6 seconds)
Hi the average life of a car battery is 2-3 years it is a chemical device effected by
temperature. Fine when it is moderate temperature or hot, however when it gets cold which it does in the winter months the chemical action inside the battery slows down sometimes to the point where it has no power left in it. As the internal plates get a crust forming on them which reduces the power over time and the effect of temperature being so low the battery becomes useless. The facts can't be reversed.
some try some rather dangerous things rather than just bite the bullet and buy a new battery.
- Which car battery is better? EverStart Maxx Lead or Duralast Gold/Battery? Facts: I drive a 2007 Honda SE, 4 cylinder. Been using a Kirkland (costco battery; group size 51r) for about 5 years. Looking for a battery in case this one dies.
- What battery does my 1979 Honda CM400t need? Yes I have checked the manual, I was just wondering if someone could provide a link to the specific battery. The manual says it needs a 12 volt 12 amperes battery, thanks!
- Do I need a new battery for my motorcycle? I ride a 2012 Honda CBR250 and I just bought it 3 months ago. Although I ride it 3 times a week the battery ended up dying on me. I recently got a jump and it starts up fine now. Do I still need to take it to a motorcycle shop and buy a new battery?
- Bought a 1985 Honda inspector kid told me it needed new battery but started with jump got new battery and it was dead next day? Pretty sure its the alternator just wanted some second opinions also I got the bike for 600 dollars you guys think thats a good deal
