Hi so age and engine wear lies at the root of the issue.
Maybe you are pressing on the brake and not the accelerator?
When was the last time you had a full on tune up? Spark plugs and all? That might be the problem.
Is the tachometer going way up when you press on the gas pedal but the vehicle doesn't move any faster? That would be the transmission slipping if it's an automatic and you'll be needing a rebuilt transmission.

Can it achieve over 100 mph? I've heard that it can do 1-10 but I'm not sure whether that's for the 5 speed or the automatic bc the extra gear makes a difference in my opinion.
