What are things to watch out for when buying a car after getting internet price?

I'm shopping for honda accord EX-L(MSRP $29505 including destination charge). I requested quote from edmund and several dealers gave me different quotes and best ones I got was $25000ish including destination charge which seem to be quite a bargain. They said there will be $80 additional for document & process fee.

I'm pretty naive and far from savvy which is kind of why I hate buying car and have been putting this off. I know dealers will try to make up for those bargain price by adding other fees, etc. What other fees can they possibly add that I should watch out for beside tax and legit fees like title, license plate, registration fee? Or these are already included in $80 doc fee?

Supposing I don't get ripped off by other bogus fee, is $25000 for EX-L and destination fee good deal? Or other most savvy buyers can negotiate lower? Is internet price still negotiable?

There's a comprehensive list of fees which may be levied, including the ones which don't necessarily need to be part of your final deal.

Some dealers will try just about anything. I negotiated a price on a vehicle that was a dealer trade. I was not told about any additional fees. I told them I would buy the vehicle. They got it. I went to pick it up. They tried to charge an additional $35. They had to chase me down in the parking lot to tell me that they would "waive: the fee. Undercoating is a HUGE rip off. We have one local dealer that tried to charge $190 for green tire valve caps supposedly meaning that the tires are filled with pure nitrogen rather than 70% nitrogen. Even if they filled them with pure nitrogen it would only be about $10 of nitrogen. As long as you have been told about the $80 extra charge, that should be OK. If they try to get more then $25,080, just get up and leave. There are a LOT of other car dealers.

There are no "bogus" fees. The fees they charge are mostly collected by the state. Taxes, tags, registration fees. These costs are all set by the state and any car you buy at any dealer you shop at will be the same. They can't make a profit on these fees. They are set by the state.

The ONLY dealer fees is that processing or DOC fee. This is the fee that is collected to cover the costs incurred by the dealer for processing all the paperwork.

These are all legitimate fees that you;ll pay regardless of where you go.

What you need to watch out for is the add ons they love to sell you. These are all huge profit points for the dealer. Things like extended warranties, GAP insurance, Accidental death coverage, unnecessary accessories and dealer added options like leather protectant, rust proofing, glass etching, there are hundreds of them and they are all 100% unnecessary. DO NOT buy any of these. None. NADA. Say NO to every additional cost they try to tack on.

You will owe sales tax and registration in addition to the discounted sales price. They may try to sell you an extended warrant, window tint or special paint treatment but just say NO!

I've never bought a new car but I've heard lots of stories about internet prices being "wrong" and after hours of haggling they might agree to that price if you buy an extended warranty or something. (which you should never do)

Plus, they add sales tax & title fee.

Truecar.com will likely give you some figures. Your best bet is to buy 2-3 year old used and pay cash.

  • When you buy/lease a brand new car, are you able to add things/customize it at the dealer? In 2014 my friend financed a base model Jetta brand new red. However his model came with fog lights and LED turn signals but had hub caps. However, my other friend had a 2014 Jetta as well and had the middle trim and had no fog lights or LED turn signals but had aluminum alloy rims. Can you add things like that to a car? I know at Honda if I wanted Fog lights on the middle trim they would ask me to upgrade entirely to the highest trim which i don't need, I just want the fog lights
