What transmission fluid do I use in my 1987 Honda accord? - 1

If it is an automatic transmission, the ATF-Z1 it originally used is out of production. It has been replaced by ATF-DW1, a more expensive synthetic. Dexron can be used but it produces harsh shifting… Better to go with DW1, available at the Honda dealer.

Only use genuine Honda ATF DW1 and nothing else. Dexron is only to be used in an emergency and then must be removed As soon as possible.

  • What happens if I use a non-Honda brake fluid? I have a newer Honda that is low on brake fluid. Manual says I need to use Genuine Honda fluid which is way more expensive and only recommends using a non-Honda fluid equivalent in an emergency situation, only if it's new and sealed. So what could happen if I use a non-Honda fluid? Does it damage the system so I have to get it drained As soon as possible? Or is this just a scare tactic to sell more Honda products?
