Best tranny for a 383? 94 chevy silverado 1500?

I've recently begun converting my chevy 350 to a 383. Only original parts being used are the block, oil pump, radiator, ect. I do want to do some performance mods to make it bad *** but it won't be used as a dragster (except to smoke those annoying Hondas at stop lights). The stock transmission is currently nice and roached so it will need replaced, especially with the added power. I'm not looking to get a racing tranny just something reliable, again this will NOT be used for racing. Just everyday commuting, towing, and 4 wheeling. I'm just wondering if the best thing I can do is just have the old one rebuilt, or replaced with something else. I don't want to do any modifications, just have it bolt straight to the 94 350 block.

Send it off th a good transmission rebuilder. A good Muncie 4-speed should last a long time with no more power than a small block mak

Best trans is subjective. I can somewhat speak to both manuals and autos, but you don't say which.

NV4500 is normally considered the "best" for manuals in trucks. The OD lets you have decent gears (4.10's+) and still not have the engine screaming at freeway speeds.

The SM465 is a very good transmission, but lacks OD, so somewhat worse freeway RPM's, and rear-gears may be limited due to this.

Either one will hold up to any power you can hope to put to them. Neither is a "car" transmission… They shift hard and the gear spacing is horrid. But both were used in your body style, so the parts are out there. Of course, different lengths, so driveshaft issues will result.

700R4/4L60/4L60E is a good trans when built right. Lighter duty, but can certainly be made to hold up. I'd question holding up to extreme towing, but I know plenty of people that have towed ~6000lbs for years, over (real) mountain passes and they are still going. The later variants are better.

The 4L80E would be a smart install, since that too was available in your body style (but 3/4+ only). Needs a PCM to control it and the injection (can't recall when your bodystyle went to a PCM vs earlier ECM for the 4L60. If the trans is an "E" variant, then the vehicle had a PCM. No E variant, ECM), but should be plenty of those out there.

No car transmission will work because you can't bolt a transfer case to them.

  • Tranny Flush, 3 or 9 quarts? I called Honda today and told them my tranny fluid was brown. They recommended that I do a 3 quart drain and fill to see how my car reacts to the new fluid. My mechanic who works for Honda recommends that I do a 9 quart drain and fill because Honda Transmissions won't take it as bad as other cars will. I don't know what I should do because I feel like everyone just wants to make a quick buck off of me.
  • What Is a good dirtbike for around the 1500 dollar range? I have been looking at honda CRF 150's for a while., The f version. I'm 13 and about 5'2. If anyone has any suggestions thank you.
  • Should I get an 87 Honda rebel for 1500 or a 15 Honda rebel for 4100? Both will have same insurance rate. I know the older one will have more problems to fix but is cheaper up front while the newer one cost more now but will have less problems in the future. Also in case you are wondering the 87 is a 450cc and the 15 is a 234cc.
  • What kind of tranny do i need in my honda? My tranny is going to go out any day now. So I'm wondering what kind of tranny I'll need. I have an auto matic 95 Honda civic coupe 1.5L DX?
