I won a new car! Now what?

Ok so my local Honda dealer contacted me about a sweepstakes they were having and I always enter them because they give out gift cards but the grand prize is a new car. Sometimes I win the cards sometimes I don't. But I won the grand prize yesterday. It's a 2014 Honda Civic LX completely free. I obviously want to keep the car as it's better than my current one but my current car is financed and I've only had it 9 months. I don't know anybody who needs a car either. I could have two cars but it feels wrong haha. What should I do with my financed one? Can I have someone take over my payments?

It's nearly certain you'll have to pay tax on the winnings… And
that won't change the fact you're upside down on the current heap, if such is the case.
I'd decline the car and take some cash instead.

No. That's not how it works (unless it's a son/daughter, etc.). There's no such thing as "letting someone take over payments". You are still responsible for the registration, insurance, tickets, etc. As long at the loan is active. If your lender finds out someone else is using their vehicle, this is a violation of the contract you signed, and they will repo the car. You'll see ads on Craigslist from desperate folks trying to get people to take over their payments, but those are folks willing to take those chances.

Once you pay the taxes and fees on the prize car, sell it. Get the cash, and pay off your current car. Then it's yours, titled to you.

Maybe you should contact the dealer first and find out what you have Really won. It's unlikely to be a brand new Honda Civic.

Same happened to me it's scam. Gatta make so much $$ a year

Sign nothing. Contact the dealer and ask for full information.
It may be a scam where they tell you you have to pay Admin, Delivery, Insurance, Registration, Plates and Taxes
On the other hand it may be real but check exactly what you have won and what you are expected to pay or is there a $ limit to the prize.
When you have all the information then decide

Check with the dealer. Find out how much this "FREE" honda is really going to cost you. If its on the level. Then put your other one up for sale. Don't let some one else use it while its in your name. You will be responsible for anything they do with the vehicle, such as tickets, hit and run, killing some one in a wreck.

Might be a scam. I would be very careful.

In any event, taxes must be paid in advance and they are likely to be significant because its like earnings. Not just sales tax, INCOME tax on the value of the car if you indeed won the car.

Your old car loan must be paid in full. Nobody can take over payments and any side deal is not enforceable or advisable and probably illegal.

Congrats if you really won a new car. Ask them if you can have them pay the taxes & give you cash. That's often an option in real giveaways.

Its a Scam

  • I have a Honda HRX217 push mower. Backfired when trying to start it, now it won't start? It was running, then I shut it off to open and close a gate, and when I went to start it again there was a really loud backfire and now it won't start. It will sound like it's almost about to start but not. Then get progressively weaker each pull. I changed the spark plug and cleaned the air filter. Any ideas?
