Moving to Valdez, AK in Jan. What can I expect?
My husband and I will be moving to Valdez in Jan. He is in the Coast Guard. I have done some research, but would like some personal opinions. We just bought a newer Honda Civic (before we found out). Will we be able to get by with it? What can we do to prepare the car? Coming from California, how can I get used to the snow and weird times the sun is out?
Best in your case is to go through his unit to make contact with a USCG member already there who can offer valid advice about how to prepare. It is normal and expected.
Also ask about shipping/driving your car to Valdez. You can't drive it from the continental USA to Alaska in January by road, but there are ferries from Washington state to Alaska. However, it's not clear if Valdez has ferry service during winter.

I have moved your question from the Travel category to the Military section of the Politics & Government category as that should get you better answers.
Won't want to drive the Civic in January to AK. Valdez is a fairly small town, the town itself is pretty flat. It is just getting the car there that will be the issue. The roads and weather from the lower 48 to AK in Jan. Are no joke. Would need snow tires plus chains, emergency food for several days, emergency supplies and shelter for -50F, plus full size spare, patch kit and pump, tools, extra gas as some stretches may not have an open station for several hundred miles… I wouldn't risk it in a compact car, especially if you have less than 10,000 miles or so winter driving experience.
- What problems should you expect to have buying a car with 300k miles? Looking to buy a 7 year old Honda with 300k miles cause it's really cheap. What are some problems I should expect to have?
- Renting car, moving away? I'm renting a car in South Carolina from Stokes Honda, but I'm moving to LA in December. How do I get it registered to California?
- How much should I expect to buy in fees when buying a new motorcycle at a dealership? I want to buy a Kawasaki Ninja 300 ABS that has an MSRP of $5,299 in the state of California. The dealership I plan on going to is Fremont Honda Kawasaki. I would be financing the motorcycle. Up-front, how much should I expect to pay, assuming I buy the bike at MSRP? Thanks! Also, what information would they need? ID etc? I'm 17 and have no permit or license for any sort of vehicle. Could my mother buy it for me? She has a Class C license only.
- Bike totalled how much should i expect back? I had a driver run a stop sign and cut me off, they never stopped so my insruance covered my wreck, i'm thinking its totalled and wondering how much i will get back, its a 2012 Honda Fury abs, just bought it in November brand new from the dealership, it only had 2500 miles on it. Any help would be much appreciated.
