The most powerful motor in an Elantra would likely beat the weakest Civic. Gear ratios, length of race, skill of driver, lots of reasons that defy generalities.
For instance:
2011 Elantra 145 to 148 HP
2011 Civic 113 to 197 HP
I doubt anybody cares. My car got me to work and back, just like always. That is a thousand times better than going faster than some other car for some pointless distance. That is what I think about that.
