I replaced my engine in my car and white smoke comes out?

I have a1997 honda civic ex and I had to replace the engine and it's blowing out white smoke from the exhaust

White smoke means coolant is getting into the cylinders. Most likely a blown head gasket.

Usually means burning coolant so blown head gasket or failed oil cooler

Find everything you need to know about white smoke on the web page listed in the sources area of this answer. There can be many causes of white smoke, some which are even considered normal.

Drive it for a few hundred miles. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge and check the coolant first thing in the morning while the motor is cold. You may just have residue in the exhaust system from the last motor.

  • Mechanic said he rebuilt the engine, smoke coming out of engine, could it be the grease burning off? The mechanic said he rebuilt the engine to my 1974 Honda CB550 I bought from him. Said he rebuilt the engine and is in perfect running condition. He has many bikes lying around and seems as if he is a hobbyist for bikes. He told me that he basically greased up a lot of parts of the motor and it is burning the grease off. The next oil change I do should remove the excess grease.

  • Too much oil in engine, white smoke? I excessively overfilled my engine with oil (more than 5 quarts) in my 2001 Honda Civic EX. I drained the excess oil out after the car would not allow me to acclerate. After draining the excess oil and refilling it to its correct levels, smoke keeps coming out from the exhaust when the car is idle and when I drive it around the block for several minutes. The smoke is rather light in color (almost white or light grey). What could possibly be wrong with my car and how should I go about this?
