What is needed to turn an auto car into a manual?
I have a 2003 honda civic lx 1.7 liter automatic car, stock. I love manuals and the driving experience that comes with it. And i kinda want to turn my car into a sleeper. Luckily i don't have to pay much. My friends automotive school doesn't charge its students for labor so they can bring in their cars or their friends and families cars to be worked on and they get 40-60 percent off parts. All i have to pay is the reduced price for the parts. So i just wanted to know what parts i would need to completely swap an automatic transmission to a stick shift? And what model would you recommend in terms of performance, cost, and long term durability? Id really appreciate it!
Not worth the time and expense. Besides all the mechanical work and the modifications plus the expensive parts, you have the computer to deal with. It's not going to work out for you unless you already know everything that needs to be done.
Sell it. Buy the car you want.
You probably should not touch things you know absolutely nothing about.
If you "love" manual shift, suggest the next car you buy has one. BTW - you don't just change the transmission: on some cars, you need a different engine block, differential, drive shafts… As well as all the car's computers.
If you want a stick, see it and buy a stick. The cost of replacing an auto with a stick, if it can be done, would most likely be as much as the cost of a 2003 Civic.
A automatic to a manual tranny conversion is not a DIY on a modern car, you would spend much more than your old 2003 Civic is worth. There's no shop manual for this for any school to follow, just a silly teen dream dude.
More trouble and expense than it's worth. I've done it many times on older RWD cars. FWD cars are a lot more complicated.
Another thing is, when it's all finished, the car will not be worth a penny more than it is now, so when you sell or trade it, that's money down the toilet.
Well, you'd need to replace the transmission, the engine itself would need to be adjusted to accommodate the new hardware, the cabin would need a new hole for the clutch and the the dial assembly should be changed since you need to see rpms and not the "PRND123" lights for automatic drive modes. You'd need to install a clutch pedal and a gear lever. For the amount of coin you're looking at spending, just buy another car.
It's cheaper to sell this and buy what you want.
Transmission, Clutch pedal and slave cylinder, Smaller Brake pedal, Flywheel, Clutch, Manual transmission Powertrain Control module, Manual gauge cluster, Manual transmission car radiator (removes integrated transmission cooler), Manual transmission CV axles. Reflash of Body Control Module to pair with new PCM.
In short… Buy a manual car.
No matter what you do I don't think you could ever consider a 1.7 litre a sleeper. You'd get blown off the road by 3.6 l mini vans.
The ONLY remotely cost effective method is to find a similar vehicle that already has a manual transmission, sell the auto, and buy the manual. Even with 75% off on parts, it will cost more just for the parts than the car was worth before, or will be worth after the conversion.
