Free choice of two cars, which should I choose?

My wife is getting a newer car. Her parents are also giving us their old car b/c they were given a newer car. I was also going to get a newer car as well but I'm not a big car guy and am saving for a bigger house/kids. I commute about 20 minutes a day, so most of my driving is work.

- Should I keep my own car. 2006 Chevy Cobalt LT. 105k miles. Runs ok as I take care of my cars. Done all the 100k maintenance and even has newish tires.

OR

- Should I take the other used car, a 2007 Honda Accord V6 w/146k miles. Runs ok/about as well as the Cobalt. Only nicer thing is its got much more pickup, interior little nicer, and feels more like a tank.

OR

Keep both and have a backup. My driveway can fit another car. Never paid insurance for two cars so wonder if the insurance is much more usually

I would take the Toyota and sell the cobalt and put the money towards the new house.

With the Accord being one year less old than the Cobalt but with 40k more miles on it, both cars could be expected to last about the same time, with about the same reliability by now. If your priorities are fuel economy and lower maintenance costs, and you mainly drive just yourself, then the Chevy would be a better bet. If you need to regularly transport 2-4 adult human passengers, then the Honda will have more space and comfort inside but use more fuel overall; Honda parts could be more pricey than GM, when it needs them. You might get a small discount from your insurer for adding another vehicle to the policy, but expect to pay close to the full amount for each car (no swapping coverage for the price of one car, depending on which one you're driving at the time). To save on insurance for these cars (both 10+ years old now), you could save money by going down to Liability (3rd party) only coverage, because any payout you might get following a theft, fire or collision would be only a few hundred dollars, perhaps less than the cost of a comprehensive policy. You are fortunate to have such good choices available to you!

Quote to add the honda was only about 250 extra a year. FYI.

  • Which of these two people movers would you choose? I'm shopping for a 7 seater vehicle for the family, I'm on a strict budget and my options are these two: 1. Mitsubishi Grandis Chariot 1998 ($3650 asking) http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/mitsubishi/auction-727044065.htm 2. Honda Odyssey 2000 ($3200 asking) http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=725329092 Super greatful for any feedback on this.
  • Which is the better choice? I'm looking to buy a 4-stroke 250(dirt bike). I've had a Honda since I've started, but my buddy told me they sucked. I disagreed with him because he rides 4wheelers. I think they're all about the same. Which do you guys thinks Honda, Kawasaki, or Yamaha?
  • Can you apply for two motorcycle loans at two different dealers? So me and my dad are looking buy motorcycles. He wants to buy his from Yamaha and I want to buy mine from Honda. So we were wondering if we can apply for two loans at different places in my dads name.
  • Is riding with two pillion bad for a two wheeler vehical? I own a new Honda activa scooter, (1st servicing is not done yet).
