What kind of first car should I get?
I'll be turning 16 in a couple of months and I would like to get some opinions on some cars I've looked at. All of these are used and under $8,000.
1. 2007 Toyota Matrix
$7,991
148,527 miles
30mpg city/36 mpg hhomework
2. 2007 Honda Fit Sport
$7,995
81,302 miles
33 city/38 hhomework
3. 2008 Scion xD
$6,991
149,521 miles
27 city/33 hhomework
4. 2007 Dodge Caliber SXT
$6,995
109,830 miles
28 city/32 hhomework
5. 2007 Nissan Murano S
$7,488
169,946 miles
20 city/25 hhomework
I'm really looking for which one is best in terms of safety, as well as gas mileage. All of these are hatchback/subcompact except for the Nissan Murano S. Since I'm only almost sixteen, I really can't afford a bunch of gas. But I also won't be as experienced in driving, so it's important to have a safe car. So in terms of fuel economy and safety, which one would be best?
The Honda will have a good balance of fuel economy and space. The Matrix and Scion trail close behind
Don't even consider the Dodge Caliber, too many quality issues with Dodge cars and it holds it's value like a rock. It's not made anymore for a reason. The Murano won't give you the good gas mileage you want
Definitely the Honda, it's no wonder Honda makes awesome cars, and the fit is no exception. They have many airbags and make great gas mileage. It's also really practical and you can "fit" a lot of stuff in it. Many say it's fun to drive too. Look more into the Fit and I think you're gonna like it.
Don't like Nissans.
Don't think CVT transmissions last long so there goes the Caliber.
Toyota Matrix is hideous.
So either the Honda Fit Sport or the Scion. Personally I like the Honda Fit best.
One thing to consider is that the average car is driven around 12,000 miles per year. When you see cars with much higher mileage than that, that is a warning that the car may have been used harder than usual.
So, on that basis alone, the Honda is the only one that makes the cut.
You can't just decide by looking at a list. Check out the reviews on edmunds.com you also need to know the mileage, the overall condition, have it inspected by a good mechanic, look at a car fax; was it in a previous accident, was there front end damage, rear damage, do all the doors and hoods line up straight and open and close properly, any water damage, is it rusting away underneath? Any musty odors inside or in the trunk? Are the airbags working? Is the check engine or airbag light staying on? Is the oil clean? Is it going to need brakes, tires, fuel injectors, battery, starter, timing belt, does it require regular or premium gasoline? Take it to a good mechanic and have it looked at. Take it to a body man and ask if he see signs of accident damage…
2007 Honda Fit Sport
Ford focus
If you limit your choices to that list, the Fit is the only one I would consider. The mileage of the others are too high for a car in that price range. My first car was $600 and I took my time searching for a better one. After a year or so I found a nice deal.
If you are cost conscious, do not buy a used car with over 100k miles. Cars require maintenance and that should be accounted for. More mileage and years of age mean more maintenance regardless of maker.
