How to get this nut off of my alternator?

I changed the water pump on my 95 Honda, the ONLY thing that's keeping me from finishing the job is the alternator pivot bolt is STUCK and won't budge.

When I removed the old pump, I was able to wiggle the alternator loose just enough to slip the belt off, but now that the new pump is installed, the alternator won't budge even a tiny bit so I've been unable to put the belt back on.

To top it off there's less than 2" space between it and the wall of the engine compartment, so my socket wrench won't' fit. The only other tool I have is a flare wrench, which I tried several times and it did nothing but strip the nut edges considerably. Soon there won't be any shape left to the nut. What can I do to loosen the nut?!

It's the one sticking out beneath the water pump pulley in the center of the photo below (it's enlarged so it might look like there's more space to get to it than there actually is, there's less than 2" in front of the bolt). It looks like I'd need a socket wrench to have any hope of loosening it, but I haven't found one in any of the stores I've been to that will fit. It's driving me nuts. Are you trying to loosen from the top or from under the car? A 6-pt box wrench would do it from below. Did you shoot it with PB Blaster?

You need one of those pivoting /swiveling sockets. They are hella expensive though.

Get some WD 40 penetrating spray and spray it on the bolt to help loosen it.

  • Can I use a different nut for my motorcycle exhaust? I have Vance and Hines pipes on my honda shadow and a nut came loose and fell off somewhere. Can I put any type of nut on there as long as the threads are the same or does it have to be the exact kind that came off because the kind that came of was a cap nut that prevents over torque.
  • New alternator doesn't fit or it really hard to get in to the bracket, what should I do? I have a Honda Passport 1998, and I replace the alternator for it. I did check the new one and the old one, they are just the same. The problem is when I install new one, it hard to get in to the bracket even I try to wiggle and hammer it by wooden block. Should I grind the new alternator? Or is there any good solution for it?
