By "high torque", he means power to move the car.
You obviously know that the smaller the gear, the lower the gear, the quicker the car responds. It's just like a 10 spd bike.
You're in first gear, it's extremely easy to pedal the bike, especially on a hill. Problem is, it tops out way to easy. Oh, wait, you've got 9 other gears to use and shift into! Yaaay!
You don't climb a hill in 10th gear, you use 1st.
You don't use 1st to go fast, you use 10th gear. Get the idea of the ratio?
Same thing with 5th gear in your car. It's same as 10th gear on a bike. You use 5th gear only on freeway or highway. Or where you can go 45 mph wihtout having to shift often. It's a gas saver gear.
But James also is pretty correct about making sure the car is tuned up, and also cleaned out with some STP or gas additive. Get cheapest you can at walmart or Dollar General, and get couple of them, put in one gas tank, and burn it thru while driving for next couple weeks. If your engine is dirty inside, it'll help clean where the spark plugs burn, so you'll get better response, even when you're in 5th gear. Because you have to have some response you don't HAVE to shift down into 4th. I've had cars with 5th gears, and they still have some ability to increase speed, just not a lot of it.
But we hope you know enough about cars to do all the stuff needed to keep it running well. But then, perhaps your 5th gear really is going bad. If you know about cars, then you need to get your car to tranny shop and let them check out 5th gear, might be slipping. WE don't know, sitting here in front of our computers, so we have to rely upon you to handle all the info we give you. If you don't know about cars, then go with cleaning up the engine, getting tune up, just to make sure the car runs well.
5th isn't made for high torque applications it is the highway cruising gear in these cars. Plus add in an old worn motor not being rude but I'm guessing it hasn't seen a tune up or a fuel filter in more than a few years. So yeah you have no power in 5th.

- Turbo on my honda del sol? I got a 5 speed 93 del sol and i'm inlove with the sound cars with turbo make when people shift. That "pshh" sound like air or gas. Lol i don't know. But is it possible to get that on my delsol? And if so, what do i need to buy? Where to install? And what are the prices?
- My 1999 manual honda prelude does not shift into 5th gear or reverse smoothly? My gears are smooth from 1-4 but then takes a lot of effort to go to 5th or reverse. Also when you get out of 5th or reverse it doesn't go straight into neutral like a normal manual car. They still work but it is very annoying that i have to push it into the gears and pull them out. What could the issue be? Transmission? Shift box? I plan on changing to a short throw shifter in the future.
