Adding modification to motorbike insurance policy after I've paid upfront for a years insurance? - 1
Added (1). Hi, collecting my bike on the 12th November from the Honda dealership, thinking of putting an aftermarket exhaust on soon after I get it. But as I will be paying for a years insurance upfront what will happen when I want to add the modification to my insurance? Will they not allow it or will they make me pay a price to make up for the insurance increase, Any help will be appreciated, cheers.
A modified exhaust system won't do anything to or for your insurance. It neither adds or reduces the overall value of the bike.
Jet Doc may be wrong if you live in the UK, best to check with your insurance company to make sure.
If your insurance is going to change because of an exhaust mod, they will charge you the difference if the new insurance is higher, but they will almost certainly not refund the difference if it would be less.
Exhaust mods most certainly can change the value of a bike… Either up or down.
When I get m/c insurance they always ask if I have any add-ons, because they charge more for that. I don't think replacing the exhaust system is an add-on because you're just replacing something you took off.
Anyway, if you call the insurance company they will explain whether it's more money or not (it won't be a LOT more) and you can pay it at any time, pro-rated for a year (meaning the further you are through the insurance period, the cheaper it will be).
If you call the insurance company they will know exactly what the deal is--whether you owe them more, whether you are required to report the modification, etc.
I have had to make an adjustment to my policy for which they did not charge me because I made the adjustment within 30 days of starting the policy. After that they would have made an administration charge. Since the adjustment was for a replacement silencer (muffler) with no increase in performance the premium did not increase, so it would have been annoying to have to pay the admin fee.
Adding or changing anything of the insurance policy will usually come with a added cost.
Your insurance will likely sky-rocket as you have modified it.
Different companies have different 'rules' (i.e some will want to charge you £££s, others will charge ££s).
Either way, you'll pay an up to £50 admin fee just for changing the policy and then whatever they want to rip you off by - sorry 'charge' you - for the modification itself.
I'd get a new quote online and declare the mods to start with. It will probably be cheaper to start it with mods than change it mid-policy.

The cost of the policy will be evaluated and you will either pay more or be given a credit or refund if the total policy cost is more or less than what you paid. They usually prorate the addition or refund so your policy year remains the same. For instance, if you have 5 months left, they will determine the 12 month cost and then only charge you for 5 months if the chance results in a policy increase.
This is nothing new for them. They do this all the time. Things change for their policy holders during a year.
Yes it is going to go up they love money they will make it real easy for you to pay more.
You don't tell your insurance company. I pay mine up front every year and they think all my bikes are stock. Why would you tell those thieves anything?
- Motorbike insurance at £2000 - too high? I just bought a Honda CG 2002 124cc bike. I have a CBT. I have no NCB and have not driven a car or bike before (but have had a provisional license for 5 years). I live in London. The bike will be kept in a driveway and used for commuting to work. Given all of this, the lowest insurance quote I'm getting is £1780 p/a on any of the major comparison websites. This seems very high or is it about right?
- Dirt bike won't start after 2 years? My dirt bike has been in the garage for about 2 years now it started when I last used it. My dirt bike is a honda crf50f and still has gas but I'm notsure if its bad gas
- Can i change the vehicle on my insurance policy? I currently ride a Yamaha ybr125 motorbike and I've been looking at a Honda cbr125r. I want to get the cbr but the insurance on my ybr was paid for the full year. Is there any way I can get the cbr to replace it on the same policy?
- Is there a difference in insurance for the same car but different years? I want either a 1999 honda civic ex or 2000 honda civic ex. Is there a difference in insurance between the two cars?
