Bike won't start! 94 Honda shadow 1100?

I have a 94 shadow 1100. This morning I went out to start it and it just kept cranking over like it was about to start. It was a bit cold out so I figured it would fight me to start. Eventually I ended up draining my battery and said forget it I ll try it later. I hooked it up to a charger and after it was fully charged, I went to start it up. Only this time It didn't do anything. I let it sit for a minute and tried again and I hear a "clunk" sound coming from the bottom of my bike. Almost around my starter. I hear the clunk for like the 4-5 times I press the button then I hear nothing. Again, I let it sit, and the clunk comes back for a few more presses. My kickstand is down, my bike is in neutral and my engine kill switch isn't on. I fear I may have somehow seized my engine or just fried my starter. Anyone know what might be the issue? The bike has been running fine up until now. Hasn't sat for more that a few days since I last rode it.

You drained the battery to it's grave.
A battery charger will not bring a dead battery back to life.
The noise you heard was probably the starter motor attempting to turn the crankshaft.
With no battery amperage, the starter motor and starter clutch gears would lock up without being able to spin the crankshaft.

Attach a car battery to your bike with jumper cables (car not running)
If the bike starts as usual, replace the battery.

More likely the battery is dead beyond repair or an earth/ground connection is corroded.

A big v-twin requires a lot of cold cranking amps to turn and fire.

Engines do not seize from sitting around for a few days, starters do "fry" but they are basically simple electrical motors so that is rare.

One weak point on Hondas has been the reg/rec - that might not be the case on your bike though so check it before going to the expense of replacing.

  • If i make a wire harness will it work with out pulse generator and icu on 85 1100 honda shadow? If i just make direct line from stator to rectifier to starter selonoid and coils will it be fine with out the pulse generator and the 2 icm/icu? I want to eliminate a bunchof stuff on it and i was wondering if that could go as well. It was a mess when i bought it i will figure it out if it must stay but i just need to know if it can go because it will be less of a headache if i can keep it going with out it.
  • I have a 1996 Honda Shadow ACE. It won't start even though the battery is charged. What can I do? I just got the battery charged and the bike still won't start. I can hear it trying but it just won't catch. I know very little about engines but could it be the fuel pump or carburetor that needs to be cleaned or replaced. If so, how do I do that?
  • Honda xr70r dirt bike won't start? My brothers xr70 randomly stopped working and has been sitting here for a while. I can't seem to get the gas lid to open so I can't see if it has gas or not. I put it in neutral and tried to start it but she doesn't wanna work with me. I'm not really sure what I should try. Suggestions? (NOT GOING TO A ENGINEER BECAUSE I'm TRYING TO SELL HER)
  • Can you put harley wide glide forks on a honda shadow ace 1100? Both forks are 41mm. I'm trying to put a 21" front tire on the bike and I'm weighing my options on what I should do. If the forks can set into the triple tree with not much problem Luke only having to make shims then that's the way to go.
