Dual Sport bike for short girl?
So I'm looking into getting my first street legal bike and am wondering what to get. I'm 5'3" and about 150lbs. I ride off road with a Honda CRF 150F, but it's my baby bike (it was given to me, so I don't complain) I had surgery last year, and haven't ridden since then due to it, so a nice transition bike would be nice, but as long as it's not too heavy, and I can at least put my toes on the ground I will be happy. I like Honda (mostly because that's what I know) but if its a good bike, for a decent price I won't complain. The chances of it going off road are slim, I'm going to keep my 150 for trail rides, this will be my commuter to and from work, and school.
Same deal with my son. Same situation, but he's a bit taller than you. Here's what we found: Kawasaki has the KLR line-up. I don't like them. Top heavy, sluggish throttle response as compared to his CRF230 and TTR 250, but all in all seem like ok bikes. Not great, but ok. Suzuki has the DRZ's and make some street legal dual sports. Better bikes in my opinion. Not Honda's by any stretch of the means but very doable for riding to school and around town. The only Yamaha's we found street legal were aftermarket WR's but man, those bikes sit real tall. I'm sure you know Honda only has the bigger CRF's street legal.
Now in my opinion, I'm a motorcycle rider too, check out other bikes than dual sports. In my life I've learned one thing to be very true. Any time you combine two things to make one, you lose! Dual sports aren't as good off road as a true dirt bike and definitely aren't as good on the pavement as a "regular" bike. Go out bike shopping with your folks and sit on every bike in every shop. The Honda CB500R… NOT the CBR500R… Two totally different bikes, is considered by many to be one of the best "beginner" bikes out there. Quick, light weight, maneuverable with better than 55 mpg. It'll keep you happy for a long time. The Honda Shadow line-up has a couple of really decent md sized cruisers. You could easily handle to 500 and 750 Shadows. Triumph has some real cool retro styled bikes that are as good a bike as you'll find anywhere. Also the Yamaha/V-Star bikes are excellent.
Take a look around, sitting on bike all day is fun and gives you a chance to check out some bikes you normally wouldn't pay much attention to. Have fun!
I'm 5'2ft girl with a 27 inseam and honestly i never had a flat foot in a Dual Sport bike, most of them are very tall, but you really don't need to have both your feet on the ground, that is not very important, really. Bikes needs to fit you while you're RIDING, and, if you can get one foot to the ground, that's usually enough.

- Which dual sport should I get? I'm looking at getting a dual sport bike so I can drive on and off road (my friend and I hit the trails a lot but I want something for the city too). I like Yamahas and Hondas, and could care less for Suzuki and Kawasaki. I want one that would handle more difficult trails/hills, so I'm thinking something among the line of the DRZ400/440 or the XR650 (the 250 might be a bit small), but I'm interested in your opinions/recommendations.
- Which bike would be a good first sport bike. Looking at CBR1000/600's and also the yamaha R1/R6? I don't know much about the differences, I know some people are all for Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, of Kawasaki. Seems that whatever bike someone has, they say its the best. I wish I could just ride all of them and see for myself. Tampa, FL Sam
- What type of Dual Sport will last on the freeway? Well I want a Dual Sport bike for commuting to work and other places. I was thinking about the 2015 Honda CRF250L but I heard that on the freeway it starts to have a little trouble when hitting 60-65. Now I will be riding the freeway quite a bit since that's how I get to work. So I need help on figuring out which bike is best for me. Also I'm 6'2 and about 260pounds. Please help me and my love handles finding a perfect bike.
- What to get for Dual Sprt Tires? I own a 2014 Honda Crf250x that I plan to make a supermoto. I can only find DOT approved tires for the road, but I will take the bike on the road only around 20% of the time, so I want to buy DOT approved dirt tires. Does anyone know of such a thing?
