Honda Shadow Radiator Fan?

Since spring came around and I've had the chance to get my motorcycle ready to go back out for the year, I've found that my radiator fan isn't turning on and the overheating light just turns on.

I bought 2 different radiator switches for my 2003 vt750dc and neither of them managed to get the fan to turn on. I have also checked the fuse, cleaned the radiator, grounded the wire that is going to the switch, and the fan does turn on. Also, with both new switches I made sure the over heating light came on although I could tell that the bike was getting too hot before the light came on.

I don't understand why neither of the radiator fan switches worked, admittedly one was a $5 part from eBay and the other was $15 from a salvaged shadow on eBay. I was wondering if I'm missing anything or if I just need to try my luck with a brand new OEM part? Also if most Honda dealers carry this part or if I need to order it from somewhere?

(Yes, I made sure the part numbers matched on the switches)

Attach a bulb and battery to a test rig with the switch/thermostat, drop the thermostat into a pan of boiling water.

Then the problem probably isn't the fan switch. Is there a fan relay on that bike?

Sounds like a bad temperature sensor or broken wire, Use a volt meter and check the wire Be sure you are replacing the temp sensor in the radiator not the one for the gauge.

Get a test light and/or multimeter/DVOM and start testing for voltages/continuity. You will not go anywhere if you are not doing any tests. Pros do not guess, they test and find the failed part.

Unplug the wire from the fan switch.
Turn on the key and touch that wire to ground.
The fan should start running.

If it doesn't run, check the fan fuse.

I assume that by "switch you mean the thermostat that will turn the fan automatically on when temperatures arise.

You should check the liquid coolant pump. It the LC is not circulating, the bike will overheat.

Make sure you're using a respected liquid coolant brand.

  • Why could my 2000 Honda Civic show it's going to overheat I have coolant a new radiator a new radiator cap a new temp gauge switch and? A new thermostat head gasket is fine could it just need to flushed and a new water pump and timing belt
  • 2004 honda civic ex neither radiator fan is turning on? Yesterday I was driving home and noticed that my car was starting to overheat when I was idling at a red light. The heat started to blow out cold air as the car temp. Went up. When I started to drive again the heat worked. This morning I checked under the hood and realized the first cooling fan did not work and the ac/heat fan did not turn on either. I check the fuzes and antifreeze so was wondering what else can cause the fans to stop working
  • 1999 honda civic sedan lx a/c condenser fan won't turn on? I checked the fuses all good. Checked the relays all good. Also checked the voltage at the connecter and it's receiving 12v. The radiator ran is running. The compressor itself engages. The a/c is on and the fan still doesn't turn on I've checked the fan using an 12v dc power supply and it worked. So what could be the problem. Blower motor also works.
  • My cars radiator fan is on? I was washing my cars engine bay and out of nowhere the fan came in and the keys weren't in the ignition, I covered up everything I was supposed to and the fan is still on after 10 minutes? I turned on the car and it started up fine, should I be worried? It's a 88 Honda Accord by the way
