In Wisconsin do you need a motorcycle license to ride an automatic motorcycle?

I want to buy a Honda ctx700 but I don't want to go through the hassle of getting the license.

By "automatic" do you mean a moped or "A Type 1 motorcycle with an automatic transmission and engine certified at not more than 50cc?" If so, then no. But I'm guessing the "700" in the one you want means it's way over 50cc. In that case you definitely need to go through the hassle of getting a license just as you do in order to drive a car on public roads. http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/drivers/apply/types/motorcyc.htm. Hassle?

Just take the MSF Basic Rider Course and you will have your license. Some insurers will reduce rates as well.

You are limited to 49cc bikes if you don't take the MSF course or do the DMV permit/test. It doesn't matter how the transmission operates. What does matter is how many wheel the vehicle has. If it has 2 and has an engine, it is considered to be a moped, scooter, or motorcycle. Yes, you need a motorcycle license to ride that bike on the streets.
