Should I buy a 1980 Honda CB650?

There's a cb with a little over 14k on it. The guy has a binder of receipts of everything done to the bike. He sold it to a bike shop and they tuned it up. They are selling it for 2400. It is pretty much brand new and this will be my first bike. My friend says it will overheat on long rides so I'm curious about that.

Here are some of the things done to the bike:
aftermarket accessories: front faring, windshield, crash bar with highway pegs, chrome grips, cargo rack, sissy bar, backrest, K and N air filter, jetted.

replaced rubber intake boots, cylinder head gasket, cylinder base gasket and piston rings. New battery and fresh oil filter

With the exception of the new piston rings, everything else is just "fluff" and has nothing to do with the mechanical performance of the bike… It does not make sense to just replace the rings w/o doing the other needed work… Unless the engine and trans have been replaced or rebuilt, you are taking a gamble

45year old bike parts can be hard to find - and the price is not that great - unless you in love with the cb650 for some sentimental reasons - I would look for a good used 2000+ model year bike.

It has done less than 500 miles per year, that means it has stood for years gradually drying out the seals and gently corroding, engines are built to be run.

You will also find that the suspension probably needs refreshing, and you might need to budget for tyres, service, pads, chain and sprockets - that all adds up. You might also replace the reg/rec, a known weak point of Honda at the time.

Bear in mind that brake, frame and suspension technology has come on hugely.

But those apart they are decent bikes - look out for hidden corrosion on the wheels.

I hope they also replaced the front fork seals and fork oil. You can ride it a while and see if those leak.

  • How much should I pay for a 1980 Honda cx500? Needs battery and carb clean, with 55K miles. Dallas, tx? I'm looking forward to my first motorcycle, and I think I found one… It's a 1980 Honda CX500, it has 55K miles on it and it also needs a battery, and they also said just a carb clean… It also needs inspection sticker, and they said it will pass with ease… How much should I pay for a bike like this? I live in Texas if that makes a difference.

  • Honda 1980 xl250s problem? My bike will not accelerate in 4th or 5th gear. It runs great in 1st 2nd and 3rd it tops out at about 35-40 in 3rd but once I shift to 4th it just stays at around 35mph. When I give it more throttle in 4th gear it just makes a put put sound and looses speed. Can someone please tell me how to fix this.
