Why is my 98 Honda Odyssey using so much gas after replacing the catalytic converter?

Ok so i used a aftermarket part but it was recommended as a good brand (walker) my check engine light had been on and a mechanic told me the sound was definitely the cat. Also auto zone ran the codes and it said something about the cat. I've also replaced plugs and had a tune up and my tires are fine but my gas mileage is horrible! My brother did the job and reused and made the best of the rubber ring seal thing because the one i purchased was not right. He also used new bolts because one stripped that were also not an exact dealer fit. Could this if caused an issue? My engine light has stayed off after being reset. I've replaced the air filter. What could be the problem? Thanks for any advice i just can't afford what a shop wants to charge for these problems and i have allot of trouble trusting shops as well I've been done dirty a few times by them.

Did your brother mess with the down stream O2 sensor? You have two O2 sensors on that van one on the motor by the exhaust manifold and one just after the cat. Usually though it will throw a CEL or check engine light. Now if this is all with in a few days it takes time for the computer to re adjust. These odysseys never did get good MPG 20 around town is amazing. If you lost a few 2 or 3 then see what happens but if you are getting 10 mpg or so. The only things I can think of is if the ebrake or caliper is stuck or the wires for the plugs got mixed up. You can also try cleaning the MAF sensor.

A new catalytic converter shouldn't affect gas consumption as it is downstream from combustion. It only deals with making your exhaust cleaner.

If you're worried about what a shop charges, think about what you're wasting on extra gas.

  • How could I put a catalytic converter on a Honda civic 2000? OK this honda civic 2000 hatchback does not have a catalytic converter. Is there anyway I could get it new and installed without a problem? My car has a pipe instead of a catalytic converter and it I need it to put the oxygen sensor on it.
  • Does a Honda civic 2000 waste more has without a catalytic converter? I have a Honda civic 2000 without a cat and has a pipe instead, it needs the secondary oxygen sensor. But I was wondering if the catalytic converter affects the gas usage an anyway?
  • Do honda civic 2000 have catalytic converter? OK I was wondering if the honda civic 2000 should have two oxygen sensors. But the problem is all the honda civics that are the same only have one and also doesn't have a catalytic converter. Is this a problem? I'm afraid this is the reason why the car wastes a lot of gas.
  • Can I separate a 2000 Honda Civic EX exhaust manifold from its catalytic converter? Just learned that I have a crack in the exhaust manifold of my 2000 Honda Civic EX. I could buy a new manifold with a attached catalytic converter for about $170 but could get a used manifold for $12. I would rather save myself the $100+ by just replacing the manifold. So my question is would I be able to separate the exhaust manifold from the catalytic converter, and switch in a functional but used one?
