1989 honda crx trans problems?

Well. For the past several weeks my tranny in my crx has not shifted into third very smoothly. As I was driving, all of a sudden it felt like I got hit by a car and the car stopped. Well, started it up then I hear a horrible grinding/clunking noise in while in nuetral. I tried putting in gear (still clunking) will go in but won't move. Also when I shut the car off and put it into gear without it rolling, it still rolls and the gear doesn't catch. I had it towed home let it sit for awhile, started it up, noe it didn't seem to sound bad at all. I heard the humming still but not nearly loud as it was while in neutral, plus it drove fo ward and reverse! Can any explain wtf is wrong with my tranny?

The trnsmission is shot, kaput, broken, FUBAR

Best option is probably to try and find a good used one and get that fitted.

You can buy a tool to check your car.

Sounds like the transmission blew out. I had it blow out on my car on the freeway. I shifted to 5th and then to 6th and it sounded like parts were falling out the back of the car. I pulled over, got it into 1st gear, and that was the only gear I had. I could not get it out of 1st gear. Stuck. I don't think it would of moved if I hit it with a sledgehammer. I had to get off the freeway doing 45mph at 6500 rpms.

Probably lost the synchros.

The tranny is a goner.

Internal repairs on a manual transmission tend to be quite expensive. The most economical way to fix it would to replace it with a good used transmission. Where I live, there are salvage yards that will sell the transmission and install it too. That can be the best way to go if you have that option. Also, if you have to replace the transmission anyway, you might want to consider having a new clutch installed at the same time if you are going to be keeping that car for a while. A new clutch will probably only add about $100 to the cost of that repair since that will all be apart anyway. Basically you would just be paying for the parts.
