99 Honda will not shift into reverse?
I recently bought a 99 honda accord with "bad trans" After looking at it I found that the output shaft seal was leaking and the trans had no fluid in it. The previous owner said he replaced the trans with a junk yard one but it was no good. Before I installed the trans I bought for it I figured I would replace the seal and fill it up with fluid just to be sure it was bad. I fixed the seal and filled the trans with dextron III fluid ( I know I should use honda but didn't want to waste the money if it was no good). The transmission shift very well in all the forward gears but I can't get reverse to engage. Also when in neutral it acts like its almost halfway in drive. Any ideas on other things to check before I replace it?
If it is a manual box it is probably a loose selector fork. The problem is the gearbox will need removal and some dismantling to access the fork. They are usually clamped onto a rod but can work loose if not tightened up enough initially.
Shift cable first if that's O.K then you need another transmission. If this is a automatic the reverse is run like a standard it has a fork and hub assembly and if you hear a grinding when you put it into reverse then that assembly is no good
- My 1999 manual honda prelude does not shift into 5th gear or reverse smoothly? My gears are smooth from 1-4 but then takes a lot of effort to go to 5th or reverse. Also when you get out of 5th or reverse it doesn't go straight into neutral like a normal manual car. They still work but it is very annoying that i have to push it into the gears and pull them out. What could the issue be? Transmission? Shift box? I plan on changing to a short throw shifter in the future.
- Clunk every time I shift into reverse? I have a 2003 Acura RSX w/ 135000 miles. Every time I shift into reverse I hear a loud clunk I sometimes hear it but more faintly when it shifts to 2nd gear. The transmission shifts smoothly and I don't hear and grinding or any other abnormal sounds besides that clunk. What could the issue be? BTW honda/acura vehicles don't have ujoints since iv'e been told before it might be that.
- What is this loud noise when I shift into D? This only happens in the morning… When I shift into "D" there's a loud noise like loud chattering coming from under the hood. Only happens in "D" and only in morning. Never happens rest of day. It's a 3 year old Honda Civic with 60k miles.
- Manual car won't shift into gears? I have a 97 Honda Civic EX with almost 130,000 miles. The other day when I was backing out of my driveway and went to put my car in 1st gear to go forward it wouldnand
