Check engine light is on, on my 1999 honda accord lx?

The check engine light is on what should i do. The car has 185, xxx miles. The cars a stick shift so when i have it in neutral i noticed that the rpm stay on 1 then raise to 2 then just repeatedly does that? Is that normal? Anyone know the problem?

What is the code(s), most likely the code will indicate the idle circuit is at fault. What your car has is what we've called "Rolling idle". Try to clean the throttle plate and see if it help:

One of the most common cause is air in the cooling system. Check the coolant level, top it off and there's a bleeder screw (12 mm in size) at the engine thermostat housing, bleed the air out of it while the engine is at idle.

The FITV (Fast Idle Thermal Valve) is another one common cause, try to clean it:

If not the ICV (Idle Control Valve) need to be replaced. Shop around because the price may be less:

Sounds like IAC, idle air controller, or a sensor. Cheaper to have a mechanic fix it than change every part it could be.
