Clear White Smoke with no smell coming under the hood?

On my way to work I noticed that white smoke was coming under the hood of my car, the smoke started just when I got to work which is 17 miles from my house. Then I also noticed that the Engine Check light was turned on as I stop to investigate the situation. So I let it cool off and add water to the water compartment in case it was overheated and I went to a nearby Gas station and added oil engine in the engine. And as I start to drive it again I saw white smoke coming out the tailpipe. But there was no smoke under the hood anymore. So what might be the problem with the car? 2001 Honda Accord sedan 4 cylinder. Was it smoking because the engine oil was finishing?

White smoke from the exhaust is a sure sign that you have a blown head gasket, cracked head, or both. Do not continue driving this car or you will destroy the engine. Have this looked at by a trusted mechanic before you drive it again. If the mechanic is within a couple of miles change the oil and drive it there. Otherwise have it towed in. If you just bought the car then call the person or dealer you bought the car from as you may have a warranty. Even if you bought the car "AS IS" with no warranty you may have a case if they knew the gasket was bad when they sold you the car. You would have to get a statement from a professional mechanic to that effect.

Take it back and make them return your money.

What does: engine oil was finishing mean? The dealer of the car is the ONLY place who can read the check engine light fault code and know *exactly what is causing it.

Where did you dump water? Your supposed to add antifreeze from the dealer of the car to the radiator first and fill it to to top when the engine is stone cold. Then fill the plastic coolant recovery bottle 3/4 full second.

Filling the coolant recovery bottle to a hot engine does absolutely nothing! You have a leak in the cooling system. Water will not transfer to the cooling system when it has a leak.

At your earliest convenience read the chapter concerning the cooling system on your glove compartment.

At a bare minimum make the dealet you bought the car from do a *cooling system pressure test which will find any external or internal cooling system leaks.

  • Mechanic said he rebuilt the engine, smoke coming out of engine, could it be the grease burning off? The mechanic said he rebuilt the engine to my 1974 Honda CB550 I bought from him. Said he rebuilt the engine and is in perfect running condition. He has many bikes lying around and seems as if he is a hobbyist for bikes. He told me that he basically greased up a lot of parts of the motor and it is burning the grease off. The next oil change I do should remove the excess grease.
  • Too much oil in engine, white smoke? I excessively overfilled my engine with oil (more than 5 quarts) in my 2001 Honda Civic EX. I drained the excess oil out after the car would not allow me to acclerate. After draining the excess oil and refilling it to its correct levels, smoke keeps coming out from the exhaust when the car is idle and when I drive it around the block for several minutes. The smoke is rather light in color (almost white or light grey). What could possibly be wrong with my car and how should I go about this?
  • I replaced my engine in my car and white smoke comes out? I have a1997 honda civic ex and I had to replace the engine and it's blowing out white smoke from the exhaust
  • Smoke coming out from reservoir? Okay so I have a 98 Honda civic 1.6 4 cylinder. Everytime I drive more than 15 minutes I can see smoke coming from right side of hood where my overflow tank is (reservoir) so I open it up and most of the smoke comes from black tube on the cap connected to the overflows tank. I HAVE already replaced radiator cap, radiator hoses (top and bottom) thermostat, fuel filter. I don't know what else I could try? What else could I buy to fix the problem? Buy a new radiator? Any suggestions help
