Honda accord 2003, Did I get rip off taking it to this mechanic?
In short, I have a Honda accord 2003 that were found problems with the alternator (non-starting), terminal battery cable (negative) and serpentine belt (cracks)
Mechanic charged me overall $420
Did i get rip off?
A genuine oem alternator for that is probably about $350 retail. Don't know where he gets his parts but that sounds a reasonable charge. That sounds about right to me. A new alternator is near $200 or more alone.
You did not get rip off. Well the alternator can run from two to three hundred depending on what amp you have and the serpentine belt is another forty bucks, you do the math and tell me. That sounds reasonable. A lot of places would charge $400 or more just for the alternator. How much was the alternator? If you went to the dealer it's probably what you'd pay. Sounds quite reasonable.
Alternator is a fairly expensive part, several hundred dollars for that alone. Then the other cheaper parts, and the time it takes to fit them. So I think you have an honest and competent mechanic there, keep using him.
The old belt and corroded terminal where things that he saw where going to fail in the near future, so he replaced them as preventative maintenance, to stop you breaking down again next month (or whenever)
While we never like spending money, it's something you have to do as a car gets older. Expect to spend a couple of thousand $$ a year keeping an older car running. No. The serpentine belt & installation of that alone would be most of the cost. At least it was on my car a few years ago. After reading what you wrote, I think I was ripped off. No you were not ripped off I have just replaced the altenator on my Honda Accord. It cost me £183 + 20% value added tax. I have also replaced the "serpentine"(timing ) belt, balance shaft belt and tensioner they cost another £78 + 20% value added tax. The time it took to do all the work was about 6 hours. Bearing in mind I do not have hydraulic ramps. But do have the tools and the genuine honda manual. I think I was ripped off…

- Why did my 2003 Honda Pilot engine just died while i was driving around 30-40 miles per hour? It virbrates every now and then when i hit 35-40 miles really bad of the whole car and I also have a check engine light and vtm-4 light on. I was able to turn off to a side street put in park and shut off and then started the car back up and it was fine again. Any ideas?
- Mechanic said he rebuilt the engine, smoke coming out of engine, could it be the grease burning off? The mechanic said he rebuilt the engine to my 1974 Honda CB550 I bought from him. Said he rebuilt the engine and is in perfect running condition. He has many bikes lying around and seems as if he is a hobbyist for bikes. He told me that he basically greased up a lot of parts of the motor and it is burning the grease off. The next oil change I do should remove the excess grease.
