How much should I sell car of only own for year-and-a-half?

I bought a car for my teenage daughter March of 2018. It's a 2004 Honda Accord LX. It had ninety-nine thousand miles on it when we bought it and it has roughly $119,00 now. She's been complaining that it's too compact. I bought it for $4,300 and it has about $360 in maintenance repairs that needs to be done. The gentleman I'm looking to sell it to said that he can do that himself he's a mechanic. When I look at the Kelley blue book it's worth 2500 - 4400. And while I will take off the $360 repairs off the price how much do I take off the price for owning it a year and a half.

Understand that your repair costs from the time you owned it is not money you will get back. Consider that money as a cost of the service you got out of it.

Without seeing it, no one here can guess how good your car is, so we can't judge if it's retail value is closer to the 4400 number or the 2500 number. But indeed, whatever number it is, minus out the 360 repair number.

What shape is the body in? If it's got significant rust, then the price should be at the lower end of the scale. It the body and interior is in good shape, then it should be on the higher end. Doesn't matter what you paid for it. The kbb price is current if you got it from the website and answered all the questions correctly.

If I was buying it, I would be trying to talk you into the $2000 dollar range. It is 15+ years old and driven by a teenager.

I wonder though what your daughter has in mind to replace it. The Accord is considered a good sized car these days.

You are talking about a 15+ year old car here with well over 100k miles. I don't think you will get much more than $2000-$2500 for it, but I wish you luck.

All old cars need ongoing repairs & maintenance. You could sell it and then buy something else with just as many problems or more.

  • Should I sell my car and invest the money? I have 2 cars. A 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse and an 2006 Honda S2000. I'm thinking of selling the Honda and getting 12-15k for it. Then investing that money. I have a friend who builds and flips houses. He said if I invest he'll give me a good return on it when they sell. I forgot the percentage he said, but it was higher than doing a cd or anything like that. I like my car, but I only drive that one once a week or so. Should I try and sell it and use it to make more money?
