Machine Gun like rapid clicking when trying to start car. Is this the battery?

I have an '05 Honda Accord Hybrid. Just yesterday when starting, I heard this rapid clicking like machine gun fire. If I continue to push the key forward, it eventually starts. Is this the battery?

A bad battery might cause this clicking, but the car isn't likely to start afterward.

I'm more inclined to think that you've got a weak starter solenoid, and that the starter pinion gear isn't fully engaging with the ring gear on the flywheel.

If it starts happening regularly, take it to a mechanic. A new starter won't be too expensive. But if you try to live with this for a while, you could damage the ring gear. Replacing that would be very expensive.

The rapid clicking is from the starter solenoid not getting enough power, so most likely it is indeed the battery, or dirty battery connections.

It is the battery. In 40 years I have not heard the machine gun sound without it being a bad battery. The most likely exact failure is a cracked connection on the positive post, inside the case. The positive plates of lead-calcium batteries (like car batteries) gradually grow when chronically overcharged (very common in vehicles) and that eventually cracks the terminal connection. When you hold the key over it begins to weld the crack, just enough to get it going again.

Anyway, get the battery tested and expect to replace it.

You must have had something to do with a machine gun; I wouldn't say much about it if I were you. Anyway, get it to a mechanic as soon as possible.

Your battery either needs to be charged or replaced.

Take the 12 volt battery to any store *other than Auto Zone where new ones are sold. Ask for a free 15 second battery load test to see what the reserve amperage capacity is. Amperage spins starter motors not voltage.

IF the battery turns out to be OK any new car dealer or trusted private mechanic will do a starter amperage draw test to see what the "health" of the starter is.
