I had the engine code P0420 come on in my 99 Accord V6. I already knew the code meant "Catalyst system efficiency below threshold," so I took it to a Honda dealership to diagnose the exact problem. They cam back to me with a write up that only said, "Catalyst system efficiency below threshold," and said the entire converter system needs to be replaced at a cost of $1,300. My car does have 120,000 miles on it and that's why they said they need to replace the whole system, convert, o2 sensors, the works. I have a feeling they never really checked the problem but just gave me the same computer readout I already had.
Okay, that all said. What is the cheapest way I can fix this. I drive this car maybe 1,000 miles / year but it still runs great I hate to dump it. But, I'm not going to pay $1,300 to have it fixed. But, I need to pass the emissions test and there's no way it will pass with this code.
So, any thoughts and/or questions.
I normally just use #87, under which my car runs pretty good. However to see the difference of premium gas i added about 10 gallons #91 mixing with 5 gallons of #87 which was originally in the tank to my car. After few minutes of driving check engine light was on. Could #91 gas caused it? What should I do?

I had been looking to buy a car for over amonth now. It had be low on miles and a 4 cylinder and about $3000. So I saw a 01 Honda Accord that said 111k original miles. Before this one I had seen newer ones but with too many miles. I texted right away if I could see the car, he replied we agree on meeting up next day at three. So we met the next day my dad came along too. I liked that car it had no check engine light on and clean inside and out. So I paid I took it home and parked it till I got title on my name and everything. Tuesday I went to DMV to get it ready. When the lady asked me what where the miles I told her 111k she said No miles can only move forward not back, I was so confused at this point. Then she told me the original mile on the car are 234,489 I told her no I had the title that said it had 84k but now on the odometer are 111k. She showed me on the computer with the vin number and also showed me how the man erased the one where it marked the 184,000 original miles on the car title!
Can I take this to court or what can I do? Please help! I paid way to much for this car. It needs some kind of service when driving it more than ten minutes it smells like something burning!
I'm going to college soon but, I'm commuting. Right now I drive a 2000 Honda Accord & I'm looking to buy something newer and better. I've been looking at older Jeep Grand Cherokees. Are they reliable and good cars for commuting? My school is only 45 mins away and I'm only driving there twice a week and my work is in my town. Do you think I should buy one? If not, what kind of cars should college students buy?
