Should I fix my current car or buy a new one?

I have a 1997 honda accord. I'm 17 years old, and the car has 191,000 miles on it. It has no problems aside from the motor on one of the windows needing to be replaced as the window won't roll back up, and the AC needs to be fixed. The repairs are estimated around 1000. I do have a family friend who may be willing to do it for less, but I'm unsure of what the best option is. Opinions?

ACs are hard to fix unless you are a professional and know what you are doing. On many states, you need a license to handle refrigerant. Look at his tools. If he has or is using a manifold gauge, he can probably fix the AC.
If he does not have one, see a professional AC mechanic. Should I fix my current car or buy a new one - 1

If you can't afford the $1000 to have your current car fixed, you will never be able to afford another vehicle.

My rule of thumb mostly involved the Blue Book value of the car vs. The cost of the repair.

However, buying a new used car will cost you just as much, if not more.

$500 down payment at least…

A car is good if it gets you from place to place. If you have the money go ahead and buy a new car, if you don't just drive it as is until the motor blows or something really expensive goes.

NEITHER. Remove the door panel, disconnect the window motor and lift the window. Then reconnect the motor, and keep the window closed. You CAN live without A/C.

When deciding between necessary repairs, and replacement, you need 3 numbers:
1. How much can you sell the car for AS IS?
2. How much would it cost to repair?
3. How much could you sell the car for after repair?

If 1 + 2 is more than 3, replace the car.
