What is the difference between Automatic and 5 speed Automatic?

I'm looking to buy a Honda Accord. The first car I saw was a 5 speed automatic and I saw another accord but only says "automatic"

Saying 5-speed is just implying to how many Gears the car have… In this case 5! Many transmissions vary, but usually when there's only 4 or 3 gears… They are called just automatic! This really isn't a factor when it comes to Automatic cars! As apposed to Manual cars that require a person to manually shift gears either 5 or 6

An automatic transmission usually has only 3 forward gears
Reverse (R), Low Drive (L), High Drive (H), and Overdrive (O) aka Highway use.
To say it has 4 or 5 gears implies fuel economy with the use of extra (higher) gearing.

Both have automatic transmissions. Meaning that the transmission shifts gears without you having to manually do it. Depending on the transmission, it can have three, four or five gears that the transmission have shift between. Just as a manually transmission can have a different number of gears it can go through.

We know that the car that says "5 speed" has 5 gears it can shift between. The other car does not tell us how many gears it as. There's no "standard" number of gears. So if the number is not given we can't assume it has 3, 4 or 5. We're not given the information in the ad. It COULD be a "5 speed" same as the other. Or it could be different. We have no way of telling from the information you gave.

You would need to contact the seller and ask them the number of gears. (Do not be surprised if they have no clue. Because it is automatic most people pay no attention to the number of gears.)

You can also look on line for the specific make and model. If the model was only made with a 5 speed, then it would have be a 5 speed. If it was made with a 3 speed and you have to pay extra for the 4 or 5, it is probably going to be a 3 speed.

The idea behind the different gears is that the more gears the more choices the car has to assume that it is using a geat that gives you the best gas milage. Plus it can give you "more power" for towing, etc it if has more gears.

The first would be an automatic with any number of gears. They do not know or do not think that you care.

The second is an automatic with exactly 5 gears. OR (and I have see this happen often) they meant to say '5 speed, manual' but the 'automatic' got inserted in the ad by mistake.

Both are automatic transmissions but a 5-speed automatic tells you how many forward gears it has. Reverse gear(s), yes, some automatics have more than one, are not considered as part of the equation when a manufacturer lists the number of gears in their automatic transmissions.
