Why will my 2002 Honda Accord not shift into park?
I can literally shift it into the park position, but it's not acting like it is in park. Even when I have it "shifted" to park, I can't start the car. I can only start it in Neutral.
When it is in the park position, the park light doesn't come on, and I can easily shift it down to reverse or neutral without having to press and hold the button. What could be wrong?
Check for a bad park/neutral switch (transmission range sensor).
1. The switch is loose. 2. The shift linkage is broken. It will need to be opened up and diagnosed. Open hood and go out to the trans switch and watch it while another goes through the gears. Over your head? Tow it in.
I'd start with replacing the range switch on the tranny.
That era Honda was notorious for the shift bushings wearing out. That sounds like your problem. If you want to handle it yourself Rockauto has a bushing set for the linkage.
Have the shifter adjusted.
The linkage is either damaged or out of adjustment or the shaft bushing has failed. It's not a repair job for the average non-mechanic to tackle.
1. It is a Honda.
2. It is 16+ years old.
3. I can't see your car from where I'm.
4. You seem to think it might be something you can fix yourself, Wrong!
5. You need the services of a Mechanic.
6. People often buy older cars and high mileage cars because they are short of cash and/or credit. This does not work because older cars need more frequent repairs. Older cars are frequently owned by Mechanics who will fix them up someday. The problem is that if they are actually competent mechanics they are too busy fixing things for other people so their car never gets fully and properly repaired.
It's old

Dirt, sticky from could be inside the gear console. Try carefully taking off the cover and clean gear shifter. Of course do not use cleaners or water. If that does not work then you may have a worn shift linkage.
- My 1999 manual honda prelude does not shift into 5th gear or reverse smoothly? My gears are smooth from 1-4 but then takes a lot of effort to go to 5th or reverse. Also when you get out of 5th or reverse it doesn't go straight into neutral like a normal manual car. They still work but it is very annoying that i have to push it into the gears and pull them out. What could the issue be? Transmission? Shift box? I plan on changing to a short throw shifter in the future.
- Clunk every time I shift into reverse? I have a 2003 Acura RSX w/ 135000 miles. Every time I shift into reverse I hear a loud clunk I sometimes hear it but more faintly when it shifts to 2nd gear. The transmission shifts smoothly and I don't hear and grinding or any other abnormal sounds besides that clunk. What could the issue be? BTW honda/acura vehicles don't have ujoints since iv'e been told before it might be that.
- What is this loud noise when I shift into D? This only happens in the morning… When I shift into "D" there's a loud noise like loud chattering coming from under the hood. Only happens in "D" and only in morning. Never happens rest of day. It's a 3 year old Honda Civic with 60k miles.
- My 2007 Honda Civic Lx can't shift from park to neutral? After having it on jacks with the parking brake on stilts I rolled it out of my driveway in neutral and put it into park and now it won't come out of park.
