Will flooring it in first gear damage your car? (Auto)?

Yesterday I was driving back from the store with girlfriend and she was sitting with her feet up by the center console. She bumped the gear shifter into drive 1 or drive 2 and I didn't realize it till I hopped on the freeway. I pressed the gas pretty hard and realized the problem when the RPMs went to 6 / 7 (the red) and the car wouldn t pick up speed. I instantly pulled off the gas and then put the car in drive 4. I have experienced no issues with my car thus far. Will everything be okay? It's an 02 Honda Accord

As long as it is not making any strange noises it is fine, just don't do it again or it might damage the engine.

Yes it's fine.
Most cars need a button pressed to select a lower gear.
Her sitting like that risks serious injury in a crash.

No… The engine would cut off before the revs got too high.

Not likely that anything has gone wrong. But tell her how to sit properly.

No. You have a rev limiter that will keep the engine from revving too high.

No problem. Honda make engines that rev to 18000 for race cars

Duhh!

It's the wrong place for feet!

If the engine didn't explode, then it probably has survived.

The shifter could easily be bumped out of DRIVE into NEUTRAL, but not into FIRST. That involves a double motion. So I think that you're trolling!

Redlining that engine could cross up the valves and damage the top end. You'd know right away if that happened. Mind that she puts her feet on the floor or lay on the back seat if she has trouble sitting straight, since that could cost you a few grand to have fixed if it comes to valve damage. That vintage of Honda however, had an especially trouble prone automatic transmission. Start saving money for a rebuilt one when it goes south on you- and it will go south on you.

"Yesterday I was driving back from the store with girlfriend and she was sitting with her feet up by the center console."

Pretty dumb idea on the girlfriend's part. Feet on the floor whilst the car is in motion. This is a safety issue.

"She bumped the gear shifter into drive 1 or drive 2 and I didn't realize it till I hopped on the freeway. "

Another reason to keep you feet on the floor

". I pressed the gas pretty hard and realized the problem when the RPMs went to 6 / 7 (the red) and the car wouldn t pick up speed."

The engine's ECU has a fuel cutoff point (also known as a rev limiter or governor). The ECU will cut fuel to the injectors and/or spark to the ignition. Should the engine speed reach a certain point. When the engine speed drops below a certain point (generally about 100-200 RPM less than the cutoff) the fuel injectors and/or ignition start firing again. When this happens the engine will cut in and out rapidly. This is done preserve the engine in case the driver does something stupid, it's something that just about all modern cars have. It looks like it worked as intended in this case.

" I instantly pulled off the gas and then put the car in drive 4. I have experienced no issues with my car thus far. Will everything be okay? "

If you noticed that you were bumping into the rev limiter, then you backed off the throttle, then it didn't happen "instantly". But anyway, it looks like the rev limiter worked like it was supposed to, and your engine is fine. If you had broke something, it would be apparent by now.

Shouldn't be anything to worry about as the rev limiter seems to have done the job it was intended to do.

  • When driving on auto-gear, the D3 light come out randomly. Why and how do I fix it? I have a problem with my Honda Stream car. When driving on auto-gear, the D3 light come out randomly. Only when I push the button on the gear stick that the D3 light goes off. This is very frequent and became dangerous to drive. I can't find the reason. I went to the Honda service centre and few other car repair shops but they could not find the fault either. I'm stuck with this situation.
  • Is the 1985 Honda CR 500 water pump gear shaft compatible with the 86-2001 Honda CR 500 water pump gear shaft? I have a 1985 CR 500 and the water pump gear shaft broke. It has been discontinued from Honda, and no one else has it. It is a metal gear. The one's for the 1986-2001 CR 500 are plastic. If I have to use plastic, I will. However, I prefer not to. If anyone knows where I can get the OEM 1985 Honda CR 500 gear shaft, I would forever be grateful.
  • Is it better to become a auto technician at a dealership or open up your own shop? I like Ford, Toyota, Honda, Porsche. I'm a senior high school student making a mind if its better to work at a dealership or open up own auto shop? I'm aware that most dealerships uses flat rate system and I do have some knowledge about cars in general. I work at a private auto shop as of currently. Oil change, mount and balance tire, brake fluid, transmission fluid, brake pad and rotors replacement. ETC. I pretty much do the basics stuff.
  • How long does it take for loan max to repossess your car after your loan due date in Ohio? I took out an $800 title loan on my 2000 Honda Oddyssey (188,000 miles) and I can't make the initial repayment amount of $288 on time. How long will it be before they send someone out to repossess my car? I live in Ohio and I'm really afraid they will repossess it before I can come up with the cash.
