1994 Honda Civic won't start when the car is hot?

I have a 94 civic dx hatchback. It seems the car only starts when it's cold.

1. The car starts in cold. After 20 to 25 minutes of driving or less minutes of freeway driving, check engine light comes on. I can still keep driving. But if I stop or pull over, the car dies. It won't start again.
2. After the car gets hot, if I throw 1 gallon of water on top of the engine, the car will start, guaranteed. The car has stopped in the middle on the road. All I needed was throw a gallon of water to get it started. If I do throw less than 1 gallon (tried half gallon), the car won't start.
3. Car had overheating issues. Fan used to not come on. Radiator, thermostat, sensor, main relay have been replaced. Fan comes on fine now. Even fan stays on sometimes if the car engine has been shut off.

Any thoughts how to go about this?

It sounds like its overheating, or a sensor, perhaps the oxygen exhaust one is bad. Dash indicators do not always work accurately. However, throwing water on a hot engine could damage it permanently. A sudden drop in temperature localized or throughout the whole engine can crack the block or head.

Hi it is suffering from heat soak where the fuel is evaporating very fast before it gets into the engine.
consult with a honda dealer.

Don't throw water on the engine. Not only is that hard on electrical like alternator, but thermal shock to heads and manifolds can crack things.
Could be temp sensor on head is bad, and only works in colder range.
You can check the sensor with ohmmeter.
I believe around 2000 ohms cold, to 150 ohms hot.
Infinite or 0 at any temp would be bad for sure.
But the check engine light is the place to start.
That means it has stored a code to tell you what the problem is.
Could also be low fuel pressure, clogged filter, vapor lock, bad purge valve, gas tank not getting vent, etc.
You could also try starting fluid to determine if fuel problem.

  • Why won't my car won't start after putting in gas? I have a 2007 civic, 80,000 miles, about a year old battery. Yesterday after I filled up the gas tank my car wouldn't start. Waited about 1 minute and it started fine. This had happened about 4 months ago (I had it checked at Honda) and they said it was okay. But today I went a short distance (15 minutes from home left the car for about 5) and my car didn't want to start. What could it be?
  • Why won't my 1994 honda civic start? Just did a tune up. Now the car cranks but won't fire. Changed plugs, cables, distributor cap and rotor. Can anyone help?
  • My car won't start but when I try to start it, it sounds like a power drill? I have a 95 Honda Civic and it does not start it keeps making a noise that sounds like a power drill spinning. I have no idea what it is or could be any more. I've pulled the starter and put in a new one and the starter is still not catching the fly wheel. I have even resorted to charging the battery, checking all fluids (transmission, antifreeze, etc.) and putting in 5 gallons of gas but still nothing, can't pay to get it to a shop. Anything helps thanks.
