2003 Honda Civic stalling issue?

What is causing my engine to stall?

My car has been stalling, and I can't drive it reliably for more than a few blocks before it stalls. Afterwards, it doesn't start right away but will typically start if I wait a little while. I took it to firestone and they told me I need a new cat, O2 sensors, ignition coils and spark plugs. Go figure, they wanted a large sum of money to replace these things. They told me the catalytic converter is completely shot, but didn't comment on the other stuff.

I tested the resistance on all four of the ignition coils and they were all the same; i take this to mean they are okay. (couldnt find the spec on them though).

Could the spark plugs be causing this issue? Wiring to the coils? Is it worth buying a new catalytic converter? I don't care about emissions quite yet, just want to be able to drive it.

It has the check engine light on (codes were generic like VTEC problem, emissions problem or something).

Any comments on likelihood of cause and recommended course of action would be appreciated.

Firstly id start going to another garage.

I can go ahead and say it sounds like a crankshaft issue but what I would say is do this.

Give the car a service. Replace oil, oil filter, air filter, Fuel filter, coolant, and spark plugs. Shouldn't cost you a lot.
Secondly, your cat is fine. Lol. Sounds funny cat? Lol. Your catalytic converter would rarely start messing it up.

After a service (from a different garage) then go from there. If it starts fine when cold then its a good sign. Once it gets warm and then starts to stall? That means that you need to look at sensors that kick in when its warm OR other sensors that expand due to the heat.

Now one trick I do is unplug the suspected sensor and start it and drive it. Any change? Better or worse? If better then there's the culprit. If its worse then you know its fine lol.

Start with the MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR or MAF or MAP.
Then look at these sensors and research about them:

Crankshaft sensor
Knock sensor
Coolant temperature sensor
Lambda sensor aka O2 sensor
Idle control valve
throttle body
Throttle body position sensor if it has one.

So firstly make sure you give it a service of them things mentioned above with the filters. Take it from there.
No need to buy a CAT yet I would say. Unless its all gunged up fully and is married up with other issues, the cat itself won't cause stalling issues.

Also check your clutch cable and make sure its connected properly and also check that no air pipes are loose or split in the engine bay.

  • 2009 honda civic si stalling? I just bought this car about 2 months ago and it's been fine with air conditioning but up until a few days ago it's been stalling when the air conditionings on. Any ideas?
  • 2008 Honda Civic possible transmission issue? All of a sudden today my car wouldn't start at first, then on a 2nd attempt it started (with difficulty). It also has the check engine light on and the D (drive indicator on dash) has a flashing light next to it. I keep reading this is due to a transmission problem. Possible low fluid? But does transmission have anything to do with the trouble starting? The car was fine a few days ago when I drove it last.
