2017 Honda Civic or 2017 Subaru Outback?

So my 2010 Chevy Malibu will be paid off by next fall and I was thinking of getting a newer car with better gas.
I would like the Outback for its safety features plus its ability to go off roads, but the Civic has nice gas, but so does the Outback. My current car gets 25-27 mpg on the high way, and I do a lot of driving! I drive 30 minutes daily to school, 15-20 minutes for work and I drive out of state once in awhile.
I just wanted some personal opinions from a 3rd party.
thank you! And i was gonna be put 5k to 10k down on the car too from my savings!

Added (1). i should also add, i do a lot of hiking and i go camping too!

I guess that all depends on how much you want to go off road.

The Subaru is going to cost significantly more than the Honda, but they are both good vehicles.

Sube WXR goes like stink.

Sounds like the Subaru fits your lifestyle more than the Civic. But that Outback will not get better fuel mileage than your current car and they are expensive. A lot more expensive than a Honda Civic.

I would chose the 2017 Subaru Outback it is a more versatile car and the Honda that I previously owned was not built well.

You made your purchase. It's paid off, finally. Now's the time to start enjoying what you paid for, if it has served you well. Maybe you have money to burn. Ask yourself; If you had the money in hand to buy one of those other cars outright today, which would you be happiest in for the next 7 years. Then take your money to the dealer and get it. Sell your Malibu privately. If you don't have the money for a down payment today, how about leasing a new car instead of buying one. That works for folks who like to get a new car every few years. Sleep on this for a few days and see if your minds changes after the full moon.

The gas mileage will not be the same or simliar between the 2. The Honda Civic is a small vehicle with front wheel drive and should get a heck of a lot better gas mileage, then 30 mpg.

Now, I own a 2010 Subaru Outback and I absolutely love it. I'm waiting for the 2018 to be available and trade in my current one. The 4 wheel drive is a heavy mechanism and that's why you loose on the mileage.

No my question to you, is do you need 4 wheel or All-Wheel drive? Does the climite yo live in warrant it? How often do you go off-road? Do you need a lot of space in the vehicle?

Before my Outback, my previous car was a Saturn SL2. I got good gas mileage, I had a lot of mileage on it (over 125,000 miles) and I had plenty of room for my camping equipment BUT i got stuck in the mud, 1 to many times and I got tired of digging myself out of the snow in the winter. (I live in the NE)

With my 2010 Subaru Outback, I get about 22 city. I get 30 highway and that's if I'm not loaded down with equipment. When the car is loaded, like I was for a recent trip (2 humans, 5 dogs and 10 days worth of stuff for all of us), I got about 28 mpg. Also, I have the 4 cyl CVT engine. The 6 cyl outback will cost at least 10 mpg LESS then the 4cyl AND requires Premium gas.

For me, I'll never go back to a small car, it's an Outback for me. If you need room for your camping equipment, have you considered a Honda FIT? OR if you want All-Wheel drive, how about the Subaru Forester?

So, you have finally paid off your vehicle and you want another one because it's "new"? If your current car is still functioning properly I would give it another 5-7 years [Save some money over that period]. But that's just me, I would NEVER want to go into debt again right after I got out of it.
