94 Honda Civic smoke when deep in the throttle?

Found a honda on craigslist i'm considering trading for but he says the car smokes when you're "deep in the throttle" and i'm wanting to know what could cause this? 30K on the motor and i'm assuming it's not when the VTEC engages otherwise i would know what it was. I can ask him what color the smoke is if anyone needs to know that. I'm hoping it could be something other than the rings but i'm thinking it might be that they didn't seat right after they built it (which i guess they did do since the post says "30k on build") Anyway, all help is appreciated.

I think if it is blue smoke, the piston rings are failing, 30 k since a rebuild is meaningless it it is in need of a rebuild NOW.

What's "deep in the throttle"? WOT? There are only two kind of piston rings on any engine: The compression rings and the oil control rings; they're both have to 'space' in certain degrees apart from each other gap.

Color of smoke? Surely an interesting question: Blue smoke indicates oil burning, whitish like smoke indicates unburned fuel or coolant while black smoke indicates lack of air into the combustion chamber.

30K miles after engine rebuilding and the smoking occur when "deep in the throttle" like you've said, oil control rings failure will produce blue smoke, the same with valve guide seals or valve guide worn out. Unburnt fuel will also produce whitish/gray color like smoke. Injectors failure?

I've not seen a failed head gasket produce a smoke like "deep in the throttle" like you've said.

Compression rings failure will be a resulting of lost of compression and the result will be hard to start, long cranking etc. What's the compression readings? Oil control rings failure will resulting in… Smoke.

VTEC system failure is another matter. My questions are: What's the color of the smoke? Does it smoke every time you step on the throttle or smoking all of the time?

You were there, test drive or let a repair shop give you an estimate of repair. Now if they (The seller) can't give you any answer after you've read my answer: Stay away from buying this car, whoever doing the engine re-building: He/she did not know anything about combustion engine at all.

I have never known of an engine that smoked on hard accleraion to be anything but compression rings. I bet the engine was not properly broken in after the rebuild.

  • Why is my 2006 Honda Metropolitan cutting out at full throttle? When I give my moped full throttle and open it up all the way it just sounds bogged down plus the acceleration is terrible and I have to gradually give it has very slowly. We replaced the air cleaner, fuel filter, coolant, oil, put premium gas in it and also purchased some injector cleaner but it still does this. We thought it was the fuel filter but it hasn't changed it (very much). Any help is appreciated thanks in advance!
  • Why is my Honda CB250 motorbike spewing out so much smoke? When I run my bike it gives off a lot of smoke when riding and at the lights. As far as I can tell it runs fine, but just smokes a lot. It was so bad tonight that the taxi behind me was pretty much engulfed by smoke, so much so I was worried if he could see the road properly or not. I of tern take it on longish distances (over an hour of riding at about 90ks an hour (56 miles. Could that have damaged it ( I know its not exactly designed for that)
  • Buying a throttle body for my 1998 Honda Civic DX? I need to buy a throttle body for my 1998 Honda Civic DX. My mechanic said it would be cheaper if I bought the part and they installed it for me. My question is: what should I be looking for online to find a reliable place to buy one? And does it matter if my car is a automatic or standard transmission? It's a standard shift, by the way.
  • 1999 Honda Civic blue exhaust smoke and burning oil? 1999 Honda Civic D15 72k mileage engine is loosing oil after a lengthy drive and also noticed smoke from exhaust, think it is blue. Have a full aftermarket exhaust system with decat on too, could decat be the reason for smoke?
