99 Honda Civic Ex Losing power on freeway?

Hi, I've randomly been having problems with my civic losing power while driving about 70mph. What happens is it will start to hesitate like it isn't getting gas and will slowly die. Rpm's steadily go down and giving it gas does nothing. Within about 10 seconds my battery light comes on as it dies. There's no check engine light. After about 2 minutes it will start right up and go, but sometimes it will happen again in a couple of minutes. I replaced the distributor about 6 months ago and was problem free until last night. The only thing I can think of is that I only had about 1\8th of a tank of gas at the time it died. Any advice?

"only had about 1\8th of a tank of gas at the time it died."

that would be typical of dirty fuel filters. When you run that low, particulate matter can be sucked up and either clog the *intank* fuel pump pick up tube sock filter, or passing that, any inline *external* fuel filter.
typically, generically, tank external, there will be one right off the fuel tank and another in the engine bay b4 the fuel rail somewhere.
FYI, it's not always particulate matter. It maybe a moisture issue. As watter is heavier than fuel. Sits at the bottom of tank.
two good products one might try after replacing app fuel filters and you tink it's not particulate contamination, but a moisture issue.
*seafoam* intank product, after filter replacement, can, as much as a cure in a can can do, will clean the fuel delivery systemwell as injectors. Also, a product called"heat" can remove all but the most severe moisture issues. Both products can be found at any auto parts stores. Read the instructions carefully.

none of that will trip a CEL/MIL lamp.

Are all fluid conditions and level look normal? You have given a really good description of your 99 Civic EX. There's a good chance that your car has gone into we've called: A limp mode.

According to you, there's no check engine light (CEL) but it does not mean that there's no defected code(s) stores in the controllers. Yes, controllers: Check for code in all of them.It could be in the transmission controller, It could be in the engine, it could be in the security controller or the MICU (Multiplex) etc.

Got the codes read for all system controllers. No exception. You'll be surprise what you'll find out how many codes there are in all controllers.

You'll have to do some testings, at least to see what are you loosing: The spark or the fuel? Understood that your tank has about 1/8th. Do check the fuel pressure first: What's the pressure? And what is the leak down test pressure? Does the car has contaminated fuel?

The reason I've said that because you may have induced contaminated gas into the car fuel tank unexpected. Filling up at a station somewhere and now the fuel level is low enough for the whatever at the bottom of you fuel tank to be pick up pass through the screen of the fuel pump and… Voila!

The following links contains several articles that you can read and apply into the situation to do some testings:
Main relay and the ignition switch (I think this is the cause laying): Both the ignition switch and the main relay

and everything else:

Edit: Could it be in the automatic transmission? Turn the key off then on again after several minutes and everything became normal and acting up after driving for a while. Does Is sound familiar?

  • Why am I slowly losing air in both my left side tires? I have a Honda Prelude 1999. I already took my car to a tire shop. They dunked the 2 tires and said both were fine.
  • Prius: Can someone explain the power usage meter & specific difference between power mode and Eco mode? My brother just got me a Prius to replace my old beater Honda and I'm having difficulty understanding the power usage meter (meter on dash with "Charge-Eco-Power") and the difference in the Eco & Power modes. I do understand the charge bit on the meter.
  • My honda activa has started losing mileage just after 2 k km - what should I do/check? Initially my activa was giving around 40 km/lit, in city conditions, but since last 100 km the mileage has dropped down to @ 25km/lit; also if the engine is left idling the speed drops and then the engine stalls/stops. Could it be a dirty carburettor or/and something else. I have not changed the grade of fuel or the petrol pump station. Also this has come to notice since my last free service, done in June'14. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  • What type of Dual Sport will last on the freeway? Well I want a Dual Sport bike for commuting to work and other places. I was thinking about the 2015 Honda CRF250L but I heard that on the freeway it starts to have a little trouble when hitting 60-65. Now I will be riding the freeway quite a bit since that's how I get to work. So I need help on figuring out which bike is best for me. Also I'm 6'2 and about 260pounds. Please help me and my love handles finding a perfect bike.
