About How Much Does a Used Car Cost?

So, I don't know much about cars.

I just want a decent car that can get me around to places. Maybe a Toyota Camry or a Honda Civic? I don't really care that much about brand.

I just want a simple used car. Since I'm still a college student and I'm getting a job soon, I just want a used car to get around.

I don't want to put myself in too much debt so I want to avoid car loans. I'd like to know how much to save up.

Approximately how much will a used car cost me? Is there anything I should know before buying a car? Or any advice when buying one?

There's no set price. Used cars sell for $500 to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

That said, to buy something reasonable that will get you through college, you will need at least $4000. $3000 for the car and the rest for taxes and a down payment on your insurance.

A Toyota Camry or a Honda Civic would be a very good choice. Even after being more than a decade old they can still be highly reliable. Realistically you are going to need approximately $3000, minimum, to find a vehicle in decent shape. And more that likely they will have high mileage, more that 100k. That is fine as long as the seller can provide proof the vehicle has be properly serviced and maintained through out the years. Don't take their word, have them show you receipts for all of the maintenance work. Also, be sure the title is clear. As in the named person on the title is indeed the seller. And only consider vehicles that have current up to date vehicle registration.

I have bought a lot of used cars, mostly from friends. I have paid from $80 to $4000. Have had good luck, never owned a Toyota or Honda. They tend to be overpriced because everyone wants them.
