Are fog lights necessary on cars?
Today my friend went to Honda and he got the 2018 Civic SE. The guy was saying that it had no fog lights and he had to opt in for the touring model which was much more in order to get the fog lights.
so are fog lights important to have? Are they just another cash grab?
I see a lot of people who drive with them on.
Not necessary unless a legal requirement where you live but a nice to have if you live somewhere with frequent low visibility conditions. Fog lamps don't help the driver see better, they help other drivers see the car better which is why they're more important to the rear than the front. On the other hand, if you don't turn them off in good visibility conditions they can obscure the brake lights and a lot of numpties can't gauge whether a vehicle in front is slowing down without seeing the brake lights. Are you sure you're not confusing fog lights with DRLs (lights automatically on when the engine is running) or with high beams?
As in not legally required when you ask "not necessary?". No, they aren't legally required in most jurisdictions (check your laws where you live).
In 50 years of driving I have only ever used fog lights for their actual intended purpose on 5-6 occasions.
FACT - if it's that dark and visibility is bad enough to require foglights, you should NOT be on the road.
They might be important so they can see when its foggy
If they were necessary for safe operations then all cars would be required to have them as standard equipment. Your friend can always have the fog lights added at the dealership later if he must have them. It will probably run only a couple of hundred bucks compared to several thousands for thee package upgrade. BTW, how is your friend buying a new 2018 Honda in 2019?
In many cases no.
In some cases yes.
Thick fog is dangerous to drive in.
Period.
Of course not…
Yes depending on where you live where i lived in London it was always foggy in winter when going to work and fog lights light up the Road under the fog i even had a Fog Light fitted to my Motorcycle But here in Australia where I live rarely do i see Fog
If you've driven in heavy fog you'll know that fog lights are necessary. And that people who drive with their fog lights on when it's clear should be fined, as the law says.
- Will the 2000 honda civic fog lights fit a 1998 honda civic? I don't wana do a conversion can i just cut the bumper where you normally install them for a 2000 honda civic
- Do you think extended warranty is necessary on new cars? A relative just bought a $40k Honda SUV and is seriously thinking about getting a 7 year/100,000 miles power-train warranty. Do you think he should since it's just $500? Or is it just flushing money down the drain since if you can't trust a new Honda to go 100k miles who can you trust?
- Do installing fog lights void warranty? I purchased Honda Amaze S i-vtec, last week. I wish to get installed fog lights in my Car, as fog lights don't come preinstalled in this version. Will it void my Warranty from Honda if I get it installed from another dealer. Please reply
- Which fog lights should I get? I have never shopped for fog lights and have no idea how to choose. I just recently purchased a brand new 2017 Honda Civic EX. The fog lights sockets are already there but the lights are not installed. Essentially i'd like white LED lights. I care more about looks than actual visibility performance. So ideally, something not too expensive. Any recommendations which brand and where to purchase?
