Are my tires really bald? 2010 Honda Civic LX-S?

I'm currently in the waiting room of a Merchant's Tire shop, waiting for them to complete what I thought would be a basic oil change. They came in telling me that my tires are "completely bald" and that they are past the "warning marks." This is my first time coming to this store and I'm concerned they may be preying on me since I look like I have no idea about cars.

I only have 26,000 miles on the car, so I'm just a bit skeptical. I always like to err on the side of caution, and have always been willing to spend the money in order to make sure my cars are safe and ready, but this just seems like I'm being baited to spend $600+…

Again it's a 2010 Honda Civic LX-S, with the same tires that came with the car. I'm about to make a 300 mile trip in this car so I'm slightly nervous. I thank you for your input.

Have the reps at the tire shop give you the tread depth measurements. If they are below 4/32 it is indeed time for replacement. FYI, a typical tire has 10/32 of tread depth new. If you are below 4/32 you will want to replace them for safety sake.

Have them show you. Technically bald is when you have less than 2/32" tread left. Below 2/32" tread you are much more prone to hydroplaning, loss of grip in wet and on gravel, and poor snow traction. So while you can still drive for a couple thousand miles more at that point, it would be wise to look into new tires.
That's what they base it on. It's an industry standard. You shouldn't drive your car until the tires are LITERALLY bald (IE zero tread, they look like race slicks).

Go take a look, DUMMY! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell that your tires are worn down to the point where they need to be replaced.

Oil change at a tire shop?

  • When should I do an oil change, rotate tires, and balance tires? I purchased a brand new 2013 Honda Civic LX Sedan in just this past february. I'm currently at 7,300 miles. I scheduled an oil change, tire rotation, and tire balance for this upcoming Saturday. Is that too much for a brand new car? I wasn't really sure.
  • What tires should I buy for my 8th gen Honda Civic Si Coupe? I recently purchased an 8th generation Honda Civic Si Coupe. I would like to know, what are a good set of tires for it? I have the special edition wheels. I think they are 17 inches. Everything on the car is stock.
  • What size tires? Honda civic? I have a civic an the size thats suposed to go on is 15. Right now i have size 14 snow tires(which i plan to switch). But since i gave a lowered vehicle, would soze 16-17 give me a smoother ride through pot holes? I feel like the tiny wheels sink right in the holes. I don't mind going to original 15, but whatever is smoother is what i'm lookin for
  • What are the best all season tires for an 09 Honda Civic coupe? Looking to replace two tires now and two more tires in 6 months. I'm looking for best bang for your buck mid range tire. I want something that will last a long time and give solid performance.
