Automatic gearbox issues?

I brought a 2002 honda civic yesterday and i was coasting down a hill in neutral for a mile at 70mph, i drove the car for another 150 miles then today all of a sudden it would not engage any gear. I checked the fluid and that's fine. When it happened the car would just rev then there was a smell like a burning clutch, Have i caused this by using neutral and what damage would it have caused.

That sounds like your torque convertor went out.In a nutshell, your engine puts power to your tranny and your tranny puts power to the wheels in automatic cars. So before you decide to buy a new trans or take it to a shop and have them over-diagnose it so they can drain your wallet, I'd have a new torque convertor put in.
Hope this helps.

Your owner's manual will tell you to never coast in neutral as it may damage the transmission. 'Nuff said!

Have you never heard of not towing an automatic car with the driven wheels on the road, they must be put on the back of a lorry? You have just found out why.

This one could be down to you. NEVER Coast in an automatic, especially at 70mph!

If it's smelling, try changing the fluid and internal filter.

Hi automatic gearboxes are far more complex that many understand. When in motion neutral should never be used it saves nothing and does make the car very unsafe. Inside an automatic gearbox is clutch like material which does a similar job which could be damaged due to being put into neutral so time to get it checked out a maker of the car dealer.

Man coasting down a hill won't **** it up. You sure that's it? When your in Neutral everything's disconnected. Simply rolling, just as if the engine was off. Coasting is a myth I promise… Now if you put it in reverse, or in park… I've heard of people having problems like this in toyota corollas shortly after changing the tranny fluid…

  • Honda Amaze automatic or Hyundai Xcent automatic? Which would be better purely in terms of performance, acceleration, smooth and fast gearshifts and handling, i mean the better drivers car. I know hondas transmission and engines are great, but is the hyundai as good too? Even though the xcent has only 4 gears, i.e. 1 less than the amaze, it has tiptronic, would this by any chance improve the driving experience? I sadly don't have the opportunity to test drive these cars.
  • Will starter from an automatic 2000 Honda civic LX fit on a automatic 2000 Honda civic HX? The lx is a 5 gear transmission and the hx is a CVT transmission. With the starter fit? Mine went out on my hx
  • My old shape honda fit is giving me problems with the gearbox(automatic transmission)? It started last month when it was not moving on drive or reverse. I changed the transmission fluid and it moved a little. Someone recommended automatic transmission treatment, i filled it. Now it does not have power to move. It can't go up the slope, it rolls back even on drive. What should i do?
  • Transmission issues with my 1999 Honda CR-V? Ok so I'm clearly having issues with the transmission with the car because the car won't switch gears when I get up to 40 it just keeps revving itself up and it just makes a loud sound, and I also saw a dark brownish fluid leaking from under the car up towards the front area. I haven't checked the transmission fluid nor do I know how to.
