Best economical car for my situation?

I'm 19 years old and right now I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma with 158k miles on it. I get around 23 mpg with it (which is great), but due to familial issues I want to give my parents the truck back after I purchase a vehicle for myself.

I'm applying for jobs at vet clinics in the area, and will be saving money until I can purchase a new or only slightly used vehicle with cash.

After 1-2 years of saving money, I will then be going to school to earn an applied sciences associates degree to become a vet tech. The school I have to go to is about 25 miles away from where I currently live, so I would really love to purchase a car that has around 35-40mpg.

Some cars i've been looking at are: Honda fits, Honda civics, Toyota corolla, Camry etc.

I need a back seat and lots of room in the car as I'm planning on keeping it for a while, and I have/will have quite a few pets. That's one reason I really like the Honda fit, because of the hatchback - there's tons of room back there. I ride horses so I will likely keep tack (saddles, etc) in there.

Also would love a car that is reliable and safe, obviously. Do you have any ideas or tips? What would be the best cars for me to look at in my area? I'm open to other suggestions besides what I mentioned above!

All options appear to be good cars for you.
In the city, small cars reign supreme. The Corolla will get worse gas mileage but it'll be easier to park and navigate narrow streets. The Camry will be slightly cheaper to insure because it's a bigger car. It will also have more interior room, slightly more cargo space in the trunk, etc.
But anyway you should compare ins & maintenance costs for all this options before buying - insripoff.blogspot.ie

Honda Civic
Mazda 3

Which of these cars would be best value: 1. 2000 Honda CR-V (230000km) 2. 2002 Toyota Rav-4 (350000km) I'm not stupid and do no quiet a lot about cars but which would you get and i know that the Honda has a lot less km per year but its older. Thanks you. The Honda is $3590 and the Rav-4 is $2950
  • I need some advice on a horse trailer situation? My dad has just bought a Honda CR-V. It can tow up to 2 tonnes. We're looking to buy a horse trailer but we're not sure about whether to get a single or double trailer. Could our car tow a double trailer with 2 15hh horses in it? Or if needs be, we would get a single one as we only have 1 horse anyway, but a double one would be more suitable but we don't mind.
