Buying 18yr/o son a New Car?

And thank you for taking time to respond. My 18 year old Son: Troy, has been badgering me and my wife about BMW's for years. From Spotting them out on the roads to racing up to me with the newest models in the motor trend spreads. When it came time for him to receive a car my wife and I weren't financially prepared to drop a lump on his dream car; I had just opened my dental practice and with my wife just opening her podiatry clinic, all of our available finances were being utilized and poured into our practices. So we made the decision to buy him an '06 Honda Civic. It had 3 previous owners and the car fax was pristine, and with the MSRP being 13,500 it was more practical for the moment. It's been 2 years since then, Troy hasn't had any accidents however I can't say the same for speeding tickets which is normal for his age group. Business in Calabasas is better than ever, and our practices have flourished and the profits are wonderful, which means now when Troy approaches me with these spreads, I no longer have a legit ament reason for why he can't have one. He'll be going to college next month and my wife and I thought it would be a wonderful surprise, however due to the plethora of speeding tickets I'm reaping the repercussions of paying the bill, a coupe is out of question. Is this a good idea. What model is age appropriate?

You know what you want to do, you don't need some stranger on the internet to confirm what you already want to do

My father told me for my first car he would match me dollar for dollar. You do not need a legitimate reason for not buying him a new car. Q man pays his own way. I can't really believe you paied his tickets. I agree with paying college tuition I wish my parents had that kind of $. However to answer your question ide look at the 3 serise

The BMW X1 and X2 series are safe, if not flashy and fast, SUV models. They are also the least expensive BMW's if that is a consideration. As a parent of three boys (now adults) I suggest that your son pay the auto insurance since tickets will increase his premiums and he'll learn that speeding has a cost. I believe they call that personal responsibility.

Bid daddy you are!

A NEW car? Maybe something like a Toyota Corolla. He's going to help pay for it, right? (How else will he learn responsibility?)

If you really to buy a car for your son then buy only a small car and not BMW or any other luxury car because of the fact that if you him a BMW now sooner or later he will start demanding a helicopter or Jet which you may not be able to afford

Sorry no disrespect. It's great you are doing well. However, you need to teach your son how to work for things in life. To also learn responsibility financially. Why are you paying for his speeding tickets? Does he have a job?
Honestly, I think at 18 years old having a bmw is asking alot at that age. How about he goes to school, gets a job and buy his own bmw with his own money. That way he will learn what it's like to work for it? I think the honda civic is a sensible, reliable car for a young man. To go over and above and grant his desire for such a car and pay for it is spoiling him and not teaching him anything. It is teaching him also a sense of entitlement, which may carry with him over into adulthood further. Let him get his own car.
At 18 yrs., I had a job and paid for my own schooling, bought my own car after I graduated. It was an old car. I worked for everything. I would not have learned anything if I had my parent stepping in always.
Bmw's are expensive to maintain alone… However, it sounds like money is not an issue for you. The issue is… What are you really teaching your son? He can't always have it all.
You will not always be there.

  • Should I let my son do this? He wants to buy a Honda S2000 with 73,000 miles for $12,500 with his own money. I'm ok with it but I advise him not to. He wants to buy it now knowing how hard it is to come across a 2001 With that low of miles in great condition witch i believe is true. This will be his first car and he is a responsible driver but should I let him buy it? Part of me says yes and the other half no.
  • Why could my 2000 Honda Civic show it's going to overheat I have coolant a new radiator a new radiator cap a new temp gauge switch and? A new thermostat head gasket is fine could it just need to flushed and a new water pump and timing belt
  • What kind of car should I buy my college-age son? I was reading an article that the Honda Civic and Buick LeSabre would great for kids going to school. But I was talking to our neighbor and she bought her son an old BMW, like 2011, and her son didn't talk to her for weeks. I want my kid to have a good time at college and not be embarrassed, but the article said these two cars were really good for teenagers. I was kinda iffy when I read about the Honda and then they said the Buick, so this may be made up or something.
  • My wife and son had a car accident? My wife and son got hit from the back at a stop, the one who hit from the back was blamed for the accident. My wife is 38 and son 16 they both went to therapy for 6 weeks for back pain but still don't know the bill price. We have a lawyer handling the case were also suppose to receive the money to fix our car the estimate was $1800 ( 08 Honda Civic hybrid ) I was wondering how much money would they be able to recover?
