Car died and takes longer to start than normal?

My car is a 2012 Honda Civic. I had the transmission replaced a few months ago, my battery is a little over a year old (October 2016 is when it was bought). The weather has gotten colder and after pumping gas two days ago when I tried starting my car after having it turned off long enough to pump gas it wouldn t start up. It started after someone jumped my car off. The voltage reading on my battery is 12.1 and it hasn't failed to start since then but it takes longer for it to start/"turn over" now. People have said my battery may need to be replaced or it is a possible alternator or starter problem? My battery is suppose to have a 5 year life

Fully charged automotive batteries should measure at 12.6 volts or above. When the engine is running, this measurement should be 13.7 to 14.7 volts. Check the voltage across the terminals when the engine is running this will tell you if the alternator is healthy. Make sure the serpentine belt is reasonably tight. If the alternator is ok return the battery under warranty. Even new batteries can fail prematurely.

Check the battery connections for corrosion. That's a common problem and it creates high resistance, preventing enough juice to get from the battery to the starter. Also, if you make a lot of short trips, meaning a lot of engine starts without letting the battery fully recharge, the battery could need replacement already. That kind of thing is very hard on batteries. It should retain at least 12.6 volts. It also wouldn't hurt to have a general tune-up done. Clean, properly gapped spark plugs can make a big difference.

It is probably the battery but could also just be corroded posts, or a bad alternator or a bad belt or several other things. A decent shop can test the system.

Sounds like a loose connection/bad connection on the battery. Have your battery cables and ends checked out and you will probably find the problem. I seriously doubt it's the alternator, could be the starter but given the gas pump situation I'm sticking with your battery cables and ends. This isn't saying that it couldn't be the battery as it very well could be as i have seen 1 year old batteries develop a bad cell and cause problems, however it only being a year old i'm doubting it as the problem and I'm thinking that someone didn't quite get them tight enough when they installed the new battery and they have worked themselves loose over time with the vibration of the car.

You can always pull the battery out and have it tested at an auto parts store for free… However I'd take whatever they tell you with a grain of salt. As i have had them tell me that the battery only had 30% life left in it, i put it back in the car and drove it for the next 6 years before i needed a new battery. But being as the battery is only a year old if they say it's bad you might qualify for a free replacement instead of a pro-rated replacement.

Since i mentioned the battery testing thing, I should go ahead and put it out there a lot of these quick lube/oil change places will test your battery and tell you that you need a new one just to get you to buy a new battery from them even though your battery is perfectly fine.

The first thing I'd do is clean any corrosion from the battery cables with baking soda and water. Then I'd remove the connectors from the battery and wire brush the connectors and battery posts to remove any oxidation, tighten the connectors and try it again. If that didn't solve the problem I'd do a load test on the battery and an output test on the alternator. Connection problems show up more frequently when the weather turns cold.

If you will take it by a auto parts, they will ck the batty, alt. For free.

Go to an auto parts store and they will test the battery and the charging system as a free service.

Go to a garage and get the battery load tested and the alternator tested for output voltage. If you do not want to spend that money, just get a new battery.

Like everyone else said, have it tested. Most places like Orileys and AutoZone will test the battery, starter, and alternator for free. If nothing comes back as being bad, than you have a different issue. If the car cranks just fine and doesn't sound sluggish when you turn the key to start it, I'd imagine the battery, starter, and alternator are fine. If that's the case, you may have a fuel pump issue. Not getting enough fuel to start the vehicle. But if it started with a jump, I'm not sure the fuel pump would be the problem.

  • I let my car sit for 3 months and the battery died. I tried to jump it but it would start? I Tried jumping my car by connecting the jumper cable plugs to it for like 1 min and few seconds… Should I keep the jumper cables in longer or do I just need to buy a new battery. I drive a honda civc 2008. *Wouldn't
  • 50CC scooter randomly died on me and refuses to start again? I have a 1997 Honda Giorno and just yesterday it was running perfectly fine when it just randomly died, it didn't make any noises while still running, it just stopped. I have since topped up the oil and tried starting it numerous times (on the kick start) to no avail. I was told that it would be a spark plug problem but I won't have the tools to change it for another couple of days. Could anyone point me to other possible problems?
  • Why does my car get unusually good gas mileage than normal? It's a 98 Honda Civic. I do 2 hours of Combined city and highway driving for 5-6 days a week. I kinda have a heavy foot, the rims are 1" bigger than stock and the car is due for it's next tune up this coming Monday. The car is rated at 28mpg combined when it was shiny back in 1998, and when I calculated mine i got 32 mpg combined, my calculation isn't wrong either as i have an mpg calculator
  • My 99 honda civic ex standard just died while driving and won't start up at all what could it be? While i was driving on the freeway i was going about 80mph when all of a sudden i started to lose power i tried to give it more gas but got no results everything else in the car was still working the radio the power windows even the phone charger worked but the engine wen i checked the.oil stick it.didn't have any oil now the car won't even kick over or make a sound wen i put the key in and crank it up all works but the engine
