Car having trouble starting unless I press the gas while starting it?

I drive a 1999 honda civic lx and it's had the check engine light on for a while now and it was having trouble starting the first time I start it everyday for a while too. This morning it didn't want to start and was making a weird noise but then I pressed the gas while turning the key and it started. Also the check engine light came off. It'll take me about 3-4 days before I can take it to a mechanic so I was wondering if someone could guess what the problem was and if my car will be safe to drive for the next 3-4 days thanks!

Your car has fuel injection, that means it has a computer control fuel system. When it is running good, you don't have to touch the gas pedal to start it, because the computer adjusts things for you. Right now something is wrong. You sort of fix it by pressing the gas. That means your car isn't getting enough gas to start, unless you help by giving it more. Start with a clogged fuel filter, then dirty injectors, spark plugs could be worn out and their wires going bad too. The fuel inject depends on good clean sensors, several of them live on your motor and can make cold starts tough. It's safe to drive, but could shut down, or stall out on the road. Buy a code reader, it plugs into your dash, right above your left knee. It's clean and easy to use and it tells you why the light came on. The last one I used reset the trouble light too. It's good to know, what you need, before a mechanic tells you it's much more than it really is. The code readers run from $50 to $100 and they can talk to most brands of cars. So you can rent it to friends and family members, to help pay yourself back the money you spent on it.

Hi No time has come for a honda dealer to get involved now as you had plenty of warning it needed attention. Now the engine management system has shut down completely. So without a honda agents disagnostic tester this baby is going no where.
