Car temperature guage problem?

I took a trip to Pittsburgh this past weekend. It was fine for the six hour drive, the next day I drove it, it overheated. So I had it towed to Honda. It's a 2004 Civic LX. They replaced the radiator, the thermostat, and the cooling fans. Drove it back to New Jersey today, and I noticed the gauge went all the way to hot only when I hit traffic and I had slowed down. It went back to cool when the car was crusiing, and kept doing that the last hour or so of the trip, depending on stopping and going. What could possibly be the problem if all of those areas got fixed?

It could be the sending unit for the fan, I've had a couple of them go bad. They stop your fans from turning on when they are supposed to. When you're moving you have enough air going through your radiator to keep it cool, and your fans are usually not on. When you're sitting in traffic, there's no or very little air going through your radiator so your fans turn on. Park your car and wait for it to heat up and see if your fans turn on. I bypassed the sensor and made it so my fans always run.

The problem more than likely was the cooling system wasn't purged of air before you started your return trip. Rarely does the temperature gauge go bad. The electric temperature sending unit usually goes bad first.

  • Why does my car temperature rise when I idle but when i drive it, it's goes back to normal? So I started noticing this problem 2 days ago. I thought I fixed it by refilling the coolant. It was working fine till today again. When I stop on a cross street or I idle, the temperature slowly rises up to the "H" but once I accelerate or move the car, it slowly goes back to normal. My A.c works perfectly either way. What could be the problem? How much would it cost? It's a 2005 Honda civic ex.
